WULFERT ADRIAN TOLBOOM September 8, 1922 - January 16, 2018 After a long life of adventure and passion, Wulfert passed away peacefully after being visited by his loving family. Born in a small house on quarter section 1-21-27 in Silverton, Manitoba, his formal schooling included St. Mary's and Angus High. He joined the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in April of 1941 at the age of 19 and was immediately sent north for training as a fur trader. His trip north included a voyage on the historic RMS Nascopie. Over the next 17 years he served trading posts throughout the north. Wulf, as he was called by his friends, spent an additional 32 years working for HBC in Edmonton and finally Winnipeg. His unique career included working as a clerk, store manager, accountant, store controller, and auditor. During his stint in the north he wooed the love of his life and convinced her to come north and marry him. Wanda Neill (1920 to 2007) and Wulfert Tolboom were married in a simple ceremony in Povungnituk, Quebec. Their adventures are immortalized in the best-selling novel "Arctic Bride" penned by his loving wife of 61 years. Wulf enjoyed 34 years with the Boy Scouts. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Fort Garry and served for 20 years on the board of Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts on Ness Avenue. He was a long-time member and active in the leadership of Christ Church Anglican until its closing. Since then he has been a member of Saint Peter's Anglican Church. In retirement he enjoyed travelling throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. Wulf is survived by two daughters, Wendy MacKenzie and her husband Gord, and Patti Zeglen and her husband Tony, and one son John Neill Tolboom and his wife Deb. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Andrew MacKenzie and his wife Kelly, Erin Toogood and her husband Ian, Ryan Tolboom and his wife Michelle, and David Zeglen and his wife Margaret. Wulf was blessed with eight great-grandchildren. Wulf is also survived by his younger brother Edward Tolboom, and his brother-in-law Keith Neill. Wulf was predeceased by his mother and father, his sister Phyllis Tolboom (1950), his wife Wanda Neill Tolboom (2007), his brother George Tolboom (2014), and his great-granddaughter Myla Toogood (2014). Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be interred beside his loving wife, Wanda, in Kelwood, Manitoba where they enjoyed 34 summers together in their summer home, Kendrick Cottage. This small-town pioneer's son now takes his rightful place in the folklore of the great expanse we call the Canadian north. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I have fond memories of Wulf from my HBHouse days. He passed on some great advice to this then young accountant, which I pass forward with attribution to this day. Sorry to learn of his passing, but happy to see he lived a long, good life. - Posted by: Tony Boron (Co-worker) on: Feb 18, 2018

  • I met Mr. Tolboom when I joined HBC in 1985, I was a young employee and remember him retiring a few months later. We were talking and I told him I was originally from Saskatchewan. From that day forward he called me a "stubble-jumper" and would giggle. When I saw him, I would say to him, "how are you doing good looking"? He would giggle and smile, and we would both laugh. He was a gentleman and it was an honor to know him. My deepest condolences to all of his family. - Posted by: Peggy Meiklejohn (Co-worker to Mr Tolboom) on: Jan 20, 2018

  • Our sympathy to the family in Wulfs passing. We went to visit him in October when we were in Winnipeg. We were so happy we stopped in, as he opened the door and recognized us and gave me a big hug, saying I know you. We had a short visit but was so nice to see him and so glad we stopped. He & Wanda were always happy to see us when we went to Winnipeg and would talk about old times with us about George & Margaret. We will miss them. Sincerely Ken & Maureen - Posted by: Ken & Maureen Burton (Friends) on: Jan 20, 2018

  • My sympathy to you, Wendy, at the loss of your dad. We have not connected for many years, but the memory of working together in "health care" is still there. I wish you well at whatever you are involved in at this time. - Posted by: Charlotte (Janzen)Redekopp (co-worker at Municipal Hospitals and VON) on: Jan 19, 2018
