Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDORA HILDEBRAND Born: July 1, 1935 Date Of Passing: January 12, 2018 It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Dora Hildebrand on January 12, 2018. She will be lovingly remembered by her son Jeff, daughter-in-law Cheryl, granddaughter Lola, sisters Hilda and Helen, brothers Billy (Tina) and Ed, and many other family and friends. She was predeceased by her mother Maria and father Isaac, sisters Ann and Mary, and brothers Isaac, Abe, Pete, Dick, Henry, Jake and John. Dora was born in Halbstadt, MB, on Canada Day in 1935, the third youngest in a farming family with 14 children. When she was a teenager, her family moved to Paraguay where she lived for several years before returning to Canada and settling in St. Catharine's, ON. Dora started working at the local General Motors plant in the early 1950s, and worked her way up the ladder to become one of the first female managers at GM in North America. She quickly earned the respect of the workers she managed, striking the best balance of tough but kind. She did all this while a single mother to Jeff, fearlessly independent in an era in which that was under-appreciated. Jeff served as her companion and navigator on many road trips and adventures in far-flung nations, which instilled in him a love for travel. When Jeff settled in Winnipeg and Lola was born in 2005, Dora moved to the city shortly after to care for and develop a very close relationship with her only grandchild. The night before Dora passed, she was in the company of those she loved, and they take comfort in that memory. Words can't convey how deeply she will be missed. At Dora's request, cremation has taken place, and the family will hold a private celebration of her life. Online messages of condolence may be left for the family in the Passages section of the Winnipeg Free Press. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dora's memory to Agape Table at agapetable.ca.

Just found out now that our dear friend Dora has passed on to her heavenly home. We have many fond memories of time spent with her when she lived in St. Catharines. There were countless coffee hours, crib nights and games of scrabble and skipbo. We laughed, we cried, we shared many conversations. She will never be forgotten! Our condolences to you Jeff, and to Cheryl and Lola. - Posted by: Dorothea and Roland Koeppe (Friends) on: Jul 22, 2018

Jeff and Cheryl ; Dora will be fondly remembered for her kindness and fun sense of humor. Dana enjoyed many good times with Dora while she was resided in st. Catherines, Also she will always remember the fun time they had on a fishing trip to jenpeg Man. It was the same week that your daughter Lola was born and right after they returned from the fishing trip they went to see your beautiful new daughter in the hospital. She will always cherish those memories with your mom. John and Dana Hildebrand - Posted by: Dana and John Hildebrand (nephew) on: Jan 27, 2018

Dora was very good neighbor. We often exchanged gardening tips and gardening produce. She would often give us home made soup and other goodies that said she made more than she needed. I wasn't as quick on returning her containers and would eventual step over the garden to her house and return her collections of containers and bowls that we had amassed. We would often invite her to step over the garden, to sit with us on a nice warm summer evening and just chat. Dora was very sociable and we all converse many different subjects. I must admit I enjoyed goading Dora on various topics that I knew would get her going. But most often she would gave back in the manner that she received. Dora, you were a great neighbor and Michele and I will miss you. The mint plants that you suggested that I plant in the garden, not just in pots, so they come every year, will remind us of you. - Posted by: Ken Botan and Michele Amy (Neighbour) on: Jan 21, 2018

Hi Jeff, I just became acquainted with your mom about 2 1/2 years ago, because of my brother, Edwin. My dad, Jacob and your grandpa, Isaac, were brothers. We had a telephone conversation about two weeks ago - when she was waiting for you to bring the Lipton's chicken noodle soup. She did speak about her dying on several occasions, but reading the obit in the paper today certainly was unexpected. I am so sorry for your loss - but the little I did get to know her - I think you were very fortunate to have a mom like her! With sympathy, Leona - Posted by: Leona Nickel (cousin) on: Jan 20, 2018
