PAMELA (PAM) JOYCE GAMMON It is with tears of sadness and also relief that our family announces the passing of Pamela Gammon on Friday, January 19, 2018 after a long but valiant struggle with dementia. Left behind to mourn Pam's passing are son Doug (Jaime); daughter Jane (Tom Dodds) and grandson Matt Dodds. She was predeceased by her kind, loving and devoted husband Reg and her best friend during her dementia years, Phyllis MacIver. Pam was born and raised in Montreal. She met Reg when he came to do an audit at the Frosst Pharmaceutical Company where she worked. After marrying and having children, they moved their family to Winnipeg where she continued her role as a loving mom and homemaker. Pam also volunteered at the Nearly New Shop and served a term as President of the McKinnon Guild. Once her children were in high school she began her career at Eaton's as a salesperson in the furniture department. She thoroughly enjoyed her time there meeting people and helping them make their selections. While there, Pam was selected for an Eaton's Canadian ad campaign. Her picture was hung on huge signs throughout various Eaton's stores much to her amusement and her children's chagrin! In retirement Pam and Reg spent 15 great winters in the Arizona sun where they had a large community of friends. Pam continued her hobby of photography as she had a photographer's natural eye and captured some beautiful sights on film. She was often asked to be the photographer by many of their friends at family gatherings and community events. In retirement Pam, a lifelong art lover, took up painting and we now have a lot of great memories in those pieces that she created. When her grandson Matt was born, Pam hit her stride and totally embraced her role of "Zama". Nothing was too much trouble when it came to Matt. Both she and Reg spent many hours with Matt exploring the neighbourhood, Sturgeon Creek and Woodhaven Park. Pam also put her stellar garage sale shopping skills to work, bringing home Lego and other assorted treasures for Matt. She was truly a wonderful Grandma. Pam's final years were very difficult and sad, but those times also came with many blessings. She was fortunate to be able to spend time in the Adult Day Program at Golden West Centennial Lodge. The staff there were awesome and a total Godsend to us. She truly loved the time she got to spend there. Pam then moved into The Rosewood care facility where she met her new best friend Phyllis. What a joy for them both even if they did get in trouble from time to time having "sleepovers" in Phyllis' room and staying up all night talking! The Rosewood staff were very kind and forgiving. Once her constant companion Phyllis passed away, life became very hard for her and she ended up spending her final years at Golden West Centennial Lodge. There are no proper words to express our gratitude to the entire staff of Golden West Centennial Lodge for their loving care and compassion. Caring for dementia patients is such a difficult task and they were so compassionate and kind right to the end. As well as the staff, our family is extremely grateful for Pam's care companions throughout these past years, Mei and Toni. We would like to particularly thank her care companion, cuddler and friend Teresa Guiboche. You made our Mom's final years so much better! A private family service will take place this spring. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you instead brighten someone's day with a smile or a hug in memory of our Mom and Grandma. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • SOOO many memories of your parents. My parents (Joan and Craig Sommerville) shared many great memories, Reg and Dad and the group and their poker nights, vacationing together in Arizona etc etc. Mum knew Pam in her childhood in Montreal. Pam was a guest and photographer at my parents 50th wedding anniversay at the Holiday Inn West. My husband and I bought our first couch and chair from Pam 41 years ago when she worked at Eaton’s Polo Park (still using it today, and has been recovered only once). I will always remember her twinkling eyes, kind soul, and awesome hugs and think of her often, especially at Christmas, when I make her Stained Glass Window Candy for my family (thank goodness she was kind enough to share her recipe), and also to give as gifts to many friends (always receive so many compliments on it). Condolences and Hugs to Doug and Jane. Sending on behalf of my sister also, Heather, Janet and Margie - Posted by: Kathi Christenson (Sommerville) (Friend of the family) on: Feb 08, 2018

  • Pam was always so spunky. She would come to the desk and talk with the staff and was always good for a hug or a hand squeeze and a smile, and she always had the prettiest painted nails! We all.miss Pam very much, and Golden West feels so different without her. Our condolences to your family as you grieve her loss. - Posted by: Sheri (Nurse) on: Jan 27, 2018

  • I'm sorry to hear about your mom's passing. I'm glad to hear she found a friend to get in trouble with while battling a terrible disease. She was a great Mom and Grandma.
