Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMAX HERST February 14, 1926 - January 27, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce that Max Herst passed away peacefully, at the Grace Hospital, early Saturday morning, January 27. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife Eleanor, his daughter Carol and son-in-law Neil Duboff, his daughter Debra, and his grandchildren Jonathan (Narisa), Michael (Natalie) and Rachel (Jonny). Also left to cherish his memory are his many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, four great-great-nieces, friends and colleagues. Max was predeceased by his parents Moishe and Rachel Herscovitch, his three brothers, Saul, Ruben, Louis, and his sister Mary. Max was born in Winnipeg on February 14, 1926. He grew up in a boisterous household with his parents and four siblings. Upon graduating from high school he went on to the University of Manitoba, School of Architecture. He graduated in 1948 and joined the Architecture firm of Green Blankstein and Russell, later known as GBR. Dad took pride in his work as an architect and the many iconic buildings he and his firm designed in Winnipeg. Among their many projects are the current City Hall, the Concert Hall, the former Winnipeg Air Terminal and many of our municipal hospitals. He retired 43 years later in 1991. Max met Eleanor Sterin in 1953 and, smitten, was ready to marry her after just three dates. They were married a year later on August 26, 1954. They had 63 wonderful years together. They travelled often to Los Angeles to visit his siblings and their families, and to Cleveland, Ohio to visit with Mom's brother and his family. They enjoyed travelling together to London, Paris, Morocco and Portugal. Max had many hobbies and interests. He was an avid reader, he loved to paint, he made and flew remote controlled airplanes, and later built model trains complete with an elaborate town and countryside surrounding the rail circuit. Max loved getting together with friends and family. He enjoyed his poker nights with the boys and later his Thursday soup lunch group at Bernstein's Deli. What he loved most of all was being with his family. In the early years when all of his siblings still lived in Winnipeg they would get together for weekend BBQs. Much later it was being around his children and grandchildren. Nothing gave him more pleasure than time with his wife and family. We would like to thank Dr. Daliwal at the Health Sciences Centre for his expert skill and care which gave Max more time with us, Dr. Arthur Blank for his ongoing care, and the caring and compassionate staff at the Grace Hospital and the Victoria Hospital. We would also like to thank Max's home caregivers Manny and Amy whose wonderful care and concern made it possible for Max to remain at home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Max/Dad, we love you and will always cherish your memories. You are dearly missed.
