Condolences & Memories (13 entries)

  • My condolences to the Liffman family and to Yolande. I worked at 400 st Mary’s for many years and had a number of occasions work and otherwise to deal with Herb. A true gentleman with a razor sharp wit. - Posted by: Donn Pirie (Worked with Herb in same building) on: Mar 29, 2018

  • Herb was a wonderful fellow. We practiced law together (and were partners) for close to 20 years, during which time we became close friends. We spoke often about one particular defamation case that was in trial for over a month and in which we ultimately were quite successful. What a sense of humour he had! Unfortunately word of his passing came too late for me to attand his funeral, which I deeply regretted. I'll always have fond memories of old Herby! - Posted by: Charles Phelan (Friend and ex-partner) on: Mar 07, 2018

  • My sincere condolences to Herb's family. I was saddened to hear of Herb's passing. Herb was our solicitor for many real estate transactions in Winnipeg, and I enjoyed our lunches in the City when we got together along with Clarke & Randy. Herb always had something humorous to make us laugh. I will miss our lunches and the great work he did for Sunrise Credit Union. Again, my condolences, very sorry about your loss. - Posted by: James Knockaert (Client) on: Feb 17, 2018

  • We are greatly saddened to hear of Herb's passing. Over the years I have had many conversations with Herb and was involved in the adoption of his beloved Beagles, Max and Patch. Although we never met, it was obvious that he was a kind, gentle man who loved his dogs completely. Sincere condolences to the family from his friends at Beagle Paws, NL. - Posted by: Denise AuCoin (Beagle Paws) on: Feb 15, 2018

  • We are so blessed to have known Herb both as a friend and through work. We enjoyed meeting both his beloved beagles and shared his passion for rescued canines. Our sincere sympathy to Herb's children, who we never met in person, but certainly "knew" through the many stories we heard of them. - Posted by: Craig and Suzanne Burgess () on: Feb 07, 2018

  • I am deeply saddened at the passing of Herbert, my lifelong friend, and my trusted legal adviser for decades. He was always clear and direct, yet insightful and kind. He allowed the time needed to discuss matters in depth. His fabulous sense of humor was always delivered kindly. I will always remember my friend and am grateful that in recent years we had wonderful video meetings by the internet. Sincere condolences are offered to all family members and to his office staff. - Posted by: David Sandell (friend) on: Feb 04, 2018

  • Sincerest condolences to Herb's family and friends. My husband was Herb's barber for over 40 years and he was always such a wonderful and generous man. We always enjoyed his visits and he was always willing to help our family with any legal advice/work we needed. He was more than just our laywer. He treated us like family. He helped us more than he knew and we will never forget it. He will truly be missed. - Posted by: Niki & Andy Koutis (Friend and client ) on: Feb 02, 2018

  • I met Herb in 1968 amidst a group of friends who went to the Original Pancake House at Polo Park that Sunday morning, and have many fond memories of those years; I came to understand him as an honorable person and always enjoyed his wry and droll humour; he took great pride in his chopped liver dish, and so did all of us who got to enjoy it with him. Sincerest condolences to Arthur and Caroline, and all of his family. - Posted by: Linda Wolch (friend) on: Feb 02, 2018

  • The true definition of a mensch. So appreciated working with him and referring work to him, as I knew that I could confidently send parties to him for fair and caring representation. He was the essence of a lawyer, both reasonable and decisive, and conflict-resolution oriented. Kind and strong. And never any question that he had your back. Sincere condolences to the Family on your loss. - Posted by: VIctoria Lehman (Colleague and friend) on: Feb 01, 2018

  • Herb was both kindhearted and humorous. His kindheartedness showed clearly the day my husband passed suddenly. Herb always told me if I ever needed legal help all I needed to do was call. So I did. His kindness will never be forgotten. As for his humorous side. While I was cleaning his condo one day, he was proudly preparing a dinner for family and friends. The table was nicely set. I noticed a bottle of antacids in the middle and inquired about them. He replied that they were to be desert! I am privileged to have known both sides of this wonderful man. - Posted by: Deb Winterburn (Former housekeeper) on: Jan 31, 2018

  • My condolences to Herb's family, I was saddened to hear of his passing. I have known Herb all my life and he was always so kind towards me, helped me on all my legal matters and gave me such good life advice. Our shared love of animals always made for some great conversations. I shall miss him. - Posted by: Mara-Lee Statham (Friend) on: Jan 31, 2018

  • I'm saddened to hear of Herbert's passing. I met Herbert a number of years ago when I worked for Centra Gas and Herbert had his law office at 400 St. Mary Ave. I was a walk-in client and Herbert did the legal work when my wife and I built a new home in Birds Hill in 1999. That was the start of a long relationship with Herbert that transitioned into my children using Herbert for all of their legal needs as well. A true gentleman who always made time to see his clients, Herbert was a great story teller and had a soft spot for animals of all kind. My condolences to Herbert's family and friends and of course Yolande who always did a stand-up job of keeping Herbert organized. Swift travels ... - Posted by: Brad Ireland (Client) on: Jan 31, 2018
