HELEN RUTH GELHORN Peacefully, on January 30, 2018, Helen, aged 96, passed away at the River East Personal Care Home in Winnipeg after a 10 year struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. Helen was predeceased by her loving husband, Alex, parents Alex and Mary Suppes, and sister Dorothy Suppes. At the time of her passing, Helen was survived by her loving family: son Alex (Valerie); son Bruce of Halfmoon Bay, BC; sister Marion Gerlach of Regina, SK; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Sadly, Helen's son Alex passed away four days later on February 3. Mom was a proud resident of Winnipeg. She was born, educated and married in Winnipeg's North End and later resided in Tuxedo, East St. Paul and North Kildonan. Mom was a long-time member of Christ Lutheran Church. Widowed at a young age, Mom raised her two sons all on her own. Mom was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand. Mom was a great cook and a fantastic baker. No one ever left her home feeling hungry. Mom was never one to sit idle. Even while watching a good game of baseball, curling or tennis on television, Mom would at the same time be creating cherished works of needlepoint art. Mom's favourite pastime was playing cards with her family. She loved a good game of cribbage. For many decades, Mom played a weekly game of Gin Rummy with her sisters-in-law Mary, Barbara, Elsie and Senda. Mom will be remembered for her faith, thoughtfulness, compassion, generosity, honesty and integrity, but most of all, her love for her family. Special thanks to the staff of the Irene Baron Eden Centre and River East Personal Care Home for the kindness and caring you gave Mom these past 10 years. Mom always referred to you as her angels. As per Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place. Services will be held on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg. A private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a room of gloom. Why cry for the soul set free? Miss me a little, but not too long And not with your heads bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared. Miss me, but let me go. For this is a journey we all must take And each must go alone. It's all part of the Master's plan, A step on the road to home. When you are sick and lonely, Visit my grave, and bring your sorrows with memories of my love. Miss me, but let me go. (Author unknown)
