LAWRENCE ROY SALTER February 11, 1934 - February 18, 2018 Lawrence passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at the age of 84. He leaves to mourn his wife Maureen; daughters Ruth Dumenko (Allan) and Kathleen Kennedy (Stuart); grandchildren Matthew and Lauren Dumenko; sister Lillian Hough; and extended family. Lawrence was born and raised in Winnipeg and attended Lord Selkirk School where he met his life long love, Maureen. They were married in 1957 and spent 60 wonderful years together. Lawrence had a love of football that began in high school. He played for the Winnipeg Rods Football Club and went as far as Blue Bomber training camp. After high school he started working for the City of Winnipeg as a time keeper in the yards, retiring after 35 years as an Industrial Relations Officer in the Personnel Department. For many years he was a member of the Winnipeg Civilian Rifle Association and the Winnipeg Provincial Rifle Association. Lawrence was a great lover of fishing, hunting and boating. Many summers were spent at Trails End Camp near Point Du Bois enjoying many adventures and good company. He continued to hunt with friends until his health made it too difficult. Lawrence also loved spending time in Libau, MB, with all of his relatives and held a deep, heartfelt love and respect for the entire Libau community which gave him great joy and a deep sense of belonging throughout his lifetime. He was also very involved with the YWCA Seniors Club and had many friends there. Dad was a Great man and an Honourable man. He will be dearly missed. A gathering in his honour will be held on Sunday, April 8, at 1:00 p.m. at the #215 Legion at 3600 De Vries Ave. (Henderson Hwy. at the Perimeter).

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Mr. Salter was a very kind person who always took time to talk and ask how people are. My Uncle Harry was one of his best friends, and he sure was there for him as a friend and throughout his illness. May Lawrence and Harry have a visit together now. Thinking of all the family at this time. - Posted by: Corinne and Allen Siddle (friends of the family) on: Mar 21, 2018

  • Clive and I both worked at the Canadian Union of Public Employees and had a working relationship for many years with Lawrence in representing City of Winnipeg employees. Lawrence was always a fair minded person and certainly had a soft spot for long-time City employees. He exuded a humanness that all his Union colleagues appreciated and often commented on. We were both saddened to learn of his passing. Our condolences to the family. - Posted by: Clive Derham and Bob Malazdrewich (Colleagues in Labour Relations) on: Mar 09, 2018

  • Our love, prayers and condolences to Maureen and family. Stan and Lawrence went to school together and remained great friends. We will miss being able to joke with Lawrence. He was a great guy and loved his family. A very caring person. Take care and know that we are here for you. - Posted by: Stan and Elsie Reid (Longtime school buddy and friend) on: Feb 27, 2018

  • Lawrence was a true gentleman and one of the finest people I've known. I had the pleasure of working with him for around 20 years, and Cheryl and I developed a friendship with Lawrence and Maureen that went beyond work. Our condolences to Maureen, and to Ruth and Kathleen and their families. Ray and Cheryl Orr - Posted by: Ray and Cheryl Orr (co-worker and friend) on: Feb 26, 2018

  • Our condolences to Maureen, Ruth, Kathleen and family members on Lawrence's passing. Having had the opportunity to work with Lawrence in the Personnel Department for approximately ten years I quickly came to appreciate his strengths and commitment to family and hard work. Throughout this time he shared with me his knowledge, wisdom and values that were reflected in his daily activities and decisions, and for that I owe him a debt of gratitude. By the manner in which he conducted himself, and the examples that he set, he earned the deep respect and friendship of all who had the opportunity and pleasure of knowing him. Truly a good guy who will be missed. Leigh and Nancy Stephensen - Posted by: Leigh Stephensen (Co-worker at the City of Winnipeg) on: Feb 25, 2018

  • Lawrence and Maureen were a wonderful couple, if more people could be this kind, loving and supportive of their spouse it would be a better world. I was honored to be invited to their home and to their 50th wedding anniversary party. Sometimes I would get annoyed with my husband over something trivial and then I would remember their counsel and their example; it gave me greater faith in the institution of marriage! Lawrence will be missed by many and no one who knew him will forget his kindness, humor, love of good food and good friends. - Posted by: Andrea Ball (Maureen's Leaf Painting Buddy) on: Feb 24, 2018
