DOREEN ETHEL EVELEEN SHAKESPEARE (SMITH) 1921 - 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doreen on Monday, February 19, 2018. Doreen was predeceased by her parents, John and Pearl, and by Bill in 2011, her loving husband of 71 years. She leaves behind her children, David (Bonnie) and Susan (Tim); grandchildren, Justin (Sarah), Shannon (Laura), Holly and Tristan; great-grandchildren, Colin, Griffin and Libby; and her 101 year old sister Elizabeth Sherwood. Doreen was born on May 5, 1921 in Treherne, MB and moved to Winnipeg with her family at an early age. In her youth, Doreen made her mark as a member of the Winnipeg Speed Skating Club. Doreen met Bill at Grand Beach and married her sweetheart on August 2, 1940 just before he left Canada to serve the duration of the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Europe. When Bill returned from service, they decided to make Transcona their home. Doreen was involved in many activities that kept her busy including the Rebekah Lodge, the UCW at Transcona Memorial United Church, curling, knitting, needle point, but her main passion was drawing and creating crafts. Doreen enjoyed many summers taking the train to the family cottage they built in 1953 at Florence Lake in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. In later years she was fortunate to create travel memories in England, Ireland and New Zealand, train trips throughout Canada with the occasional road trip to the US. The family wish to thank Dr. I. Mohammed for his many years of care, the Home Care staff that took such good care of Mum while she resided at Dakota House, and extend a heartfelt thanks to all the caring staff at Vista Park Lodge where Mum had her final short stay. In keeping with Doreen's wishes a private family service will be held at the Transcona Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made in Doreen's memory to a charity of your choice.
