BEN CAMPBELL BURNETT 1978 - 2018 It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden death of our cherished son and brother Ben on February 16, 2018. Ben was born on September 21, 1978 in Lincoln, New Zealand. He lived in Urbana Champaign (IL), Palmerston North (NZ), Mexico, Lacombe (AB), Madison (WI), Lethbridge (AB), Kelowna (BC), and Saskatoon (SK). Ben loved Lego as a boy. He loved to build things. The biggest building set for him was the computer. It became his lifelong passion. It wasn't about games; he loved the creative free play. Ben became a software developer after graduating from the University of Lethbridge in Computer Science. Ben is survived by his parents, Alison and Peter Burnett; sister Anne, brother Sam (Maureen) and children Miriam and Penny. In addition, Ben's aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, friends, and colleagues from Winnipeg, Toronto, Lethbridge, Vernon, Saskatoon, Australia, New Zealand, England, and Taiwan mourn his loss. There will be Memorial Gathering (not a service) March 4, 2018 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Fort Garry United Church located at 800 Point Road, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association. Acadia McKague's Funeral Centre Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, 306-955-1600 acadiamckaguesfuneralcentre.com

Condolences & Memories (18 entries)

  • I met Ben at the University of Lethbridge 2006 summer time. Both of us joined the co-op program and one of the advisor run interview rehearsals with us since we were going to be interviewed by Syncrude. We became good friends that summer and ended up working for Syncrude as co-op students the same year in fall. We kept in touch after graduated. Ben was one of the brilliant and compassionate person I have ever met. He was also passionate about computer science and engineering, and I admire that, as a person studied and worked at the same field. He will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to Burnett family for their loss. - Posted by: Jean-Jean Wei (Friends and University classmates) on: Jul 19, 2018

  • Ben and I became close as graduate students at the U of L. Too many nights up late debating everything. Ben sharpened my senses, my ability to articulate my thoughts, and deepened my understanding of what friendship could mean. As night owls, a text posing an out-of-field curiosity and we would be off to the races, exchanging resources and wits. More importantly, Ben was always there for me. I leaned on him heavily through classic research challenges, a break-up, and personal health stuff and continued to do so electronically after moving a handful of locations between us. Ben leaves a myriad of memories, a lifetime of warmth, and a void in my heart. And I only shared with him a small fraction of what you did. My heart is with you as you navigate the coming weeks, months, and years. Know I will always be indebted and endeared to each of you personally for each of your roles in creating and shaping the meaningful and strong man Ben was. Just ask. - Posted by: Miranda (Friend scratches the surface) on: Apr 07, 2018

  • I worked with Ben for a few months and I remember having the most interesting conversations about Mexico, computers and life in general with him. He was approachable, friendly and pretty smart. My most sincere condolences. - Posted by: Jimmy Barranco (Worked with Ben) on: Apr 02, 2018

  • Ben had a beautiful mind and a wonderful demeanor. I always cherished my trips to Lethbridge to sit and have a coffee with Ben and was looking forward to heading to Saskatoon. I enjoyed our chats about everything from whatever the current trend in programming to philosophy, to the various movies we could chat about. He was my first business partner, though that didn’t amount to much as we both moved along to other things, and a continued friend. Ben will truly be missed and the world lost big time with the loss of him. My sincerest condolences to the family. - Posted by: Kris Fleckenstein (Friend of Ben's) on: Mar 31, 2018

  • Ben was my colleague and one of our graduate students. He was my colleague as our computer system assistant, and also a graduate student. In his role as a colleague, he set up a program on our computer system enabling researchers to use idle computers in running their research problems. The program helped my colleagues and graduate students in their research very much. We will miss his very calm and reserved personality, his sense of cooperation, and friendship. - Posted by: Hadi Kharaghani (Colleague) on: Mar 03, 2018

  • I met Ben in January 2010. He was my fellow graduate student in Optmization Research group at university of Lethbridge. Later we worked together as part of University of Lethbridge IT department. He was one of the smartest person I have met. His passion for computer science was notable. We spent so much time brainstorming different aspects of software development, theories of computer science. As a person he was really compassionate. He will be truely missed.
