DR. ANAHID MELIKIAN We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear aunt Anahid Melikian on March 6, 2018 at the Concordia Hospital. She was preceded by her brothers Levon and Vahan. Left to mourn her passing are her sister-in-law Alice Melikian of Toronto, nieces Anahid (Michael), Arda (Douglas), Seta (Richard) and Dorothy, great-nephews Ramzi (Lauren) and Wisam (Sacha), great-nieces Ella, Leah, and Rachel, and great-great-nieces Noura and Hana. Anahid was born in Jerusalem on August 18, 1923. A pioneer of her own time, she left Jerusalem in her early 20s to pursue her education in the United States, where she earned her Ph.D. in English literature and a Masters degree in Library Science. Along the way, she became fluent in five languages. Upon her graduation, she returned to the Middle East, where she taught for many years at the Beirut University College, and later at the American University of Beirut. In 1986, she immigrated to Canada to be with her brothers and nieces, and accepted a position to teach at the University of Winnipeg and work in the library, where she made many friends. She was active with many charities, including CNIB and her church. A loving aunt, Anahid was passionate about books. Her favourite pastime was reading, and she always kept abreast with world events. She was especially fond of the works of Lord Byron, the subject of her Ph.D. thesis. Always willing to lend a book, but reluctant to part with her collection, fulfilling a childhood dream to have her own library. She will be greatly missed by all those who loved her. A sincere thank you to Cathedrale Manor, W.R.H.A. home care, Concordia General Hospital, the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service, and all others who helped take care of Anahid during the past months. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) in support of scholarships in the Holy Land. Cheques can be made out to ELCIC with the memo line "Scholarships for ELCJHL in memory of Anahid Melikian", 600-177 Lombard Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 0W5, or to a charity of one's choice. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 930 Winakwa Road (Windsor Park). • My mother (Emma Enns) lived across from Anahid in Cathedrale Manor, plus the two sat together at mealtimes. Anahid was so good to my mom, always telling us she would take good care of Emma. A fascinating woman with depth. I am so sorry to hear she has passed away. Sincerely, Wendy Dalton - Posted by: Wendy Dalton (friend) on: Mar 13, 2018
