BARBARA (JANE) MCGILLAWEE Barbara (Jane) McGillawee, 68, passed away in the early morning of Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Southwood Hospice in Calgary, Alberta. Jane fought a heroic battle with breast cancer spanning more than two decades and will be deeply missed. She was born December 28, 1949 to parents, Ron and Marjorie Spurrell. Jane was an avid sports fan, and loved football. She was always loyal to the home team, be that the Winnipeg Blue Bombers or the Calgary Stampeders. Upon completing her BA at the University of Guelph followed by teacher's college, Jane moved west to Winnipeg where she raised her family. She was mother to Trisha (Corey) and B.J. (Carolyn). "Mrs. McGillawee" was a dedicated teacher at St. Andrews School for more than 30 years. She loved her time in the classroom working with students in leadership, music, and putting on drama productions. After retiring, she moved to Calgary to be closer to her grandsons (Gibson-12, Everett-6, and Elliott-1). Nana's grandchildren were her greatest pride and joy. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Willem Henning and his team at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary. We thank them not only for their unwavering care and dedication, especially over the last year, but for granting us the gift of time. There is relief that Mom is no longer suffering, but our hearts are filled with sadness that we have had to say goodbye. At Jane's request, there will not be a funeral service. Memorial donations can be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (Tom Baker Cancer Centre), or cancer charity of your choice.

  • I’m a student from an exchange program (explore). I lived at Jane’s house for two months in summer 2016. I had such a great time with her. I am grateful to have known her. I will always remember Jane. - Posted by: Valérie Durocher (Friend) on: May 21, 2018

  • Jane and I taught Grade 6 together for many years at St. Andrews School. I enjoyed working with her with the drama group, attending workshops and meetings together, enjoying her enthusiasm be it work or play. I was lucky to be golfing with her when she got her hole-in-one! We shared so many wonderful times together and I am deeply saddened by her passing. My most sincere condolences to all members of her family. - Posted by: Betty Ducheck (Colleague at St. Andrews School) on: Mar 12, 2018

  • I will always remember Jane's enthusiasm when working with the drama groups at St. Andrews School. She paid attention to the details and the overall production to make it such a wonderful way of exploring self-expression for the students. Her and I attended MTC together for a year and enjoyed all the plays so much. Be at peace...for you have done good work. - Posted by: Donna Johnson (Former Colleague at St. Andrews School) on: Mar 10, 2018
