BARBARA JOYCE BELANGER (nee CUSITAR) November 2, 1945 - March 5, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Barbara Joyce Belanger (nee Cusitar), at her home. She leaves to mourn her daughter Brenna Belanger, grandchildren, Theodore and Zachary, and many close friends and family. Barb was an immensely kind, giving, and caring person who always had a love of life, cats, nursing, and especially Mickey Mouse. She attended Gordon Bell High School, graduating in 1962, then graduated from the St. Boniface Hospital School of Nursing, in 1967. Through her nursing career she held many positions including those at the Winnipeg General Hospital, Canadian Red Cross, Victoria General Hospital Emergency and ended her career at HealthLinks. She spent more than 40 years involved in the cat fancy showing and breeding Abyssinian, Maine Coons and her most beloved Japanese Bobtails. She also judged for ACFA for more than 25 years, was on the ACFA genetics committee and was honoured to be invited to judge in Beijing, China, in 2004. She enjoyed travelling the world, including many visits to Walt Disney World, in Florida, as well as California, Alaska, Hawaii and Canada's Maritime provinces. Barb was never one to have a fuss made for her. She gave from the heart and her love was unconditional. She had an amazing sense of humour and could always find something good in any situation. No matter how bad it was at the time, she would always remember it with humour. She had requested immediate cremation and no service be held, however her interment will take place in early May 2018, with a gathering of remembrance to follow. Date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), the Heart & Stroke Foundation or an animal shelter.

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • Tried to phone you today and found your obit. I returned at the end of May from sailing the Gulf. Had a nasty health encounter myself so have been out of contact. I met Barb when we both worked as Nursing directors at the canadian red cross in the 70s. We kept in touch over the years and both worked at health links sfter 2000. Barb was a bright girl who practiced nursing with ethics. We were old school girls. I enjoyed her company as well as that with her beautifull daughter. I will miss her. - Posted by: Candy Allen (Nursing) on: Sep 11, 2018

  • I just learned of Barb's death last night from some of the other members of the Dorchester Co-op - a house we shared with Barb beginning in June 1969, I am sending my sympathy at your loss, Brenna. We had lost touch over the years, but I have wonderful memories of Barbara, music, and her efforts to teach me to crochet. • Bren, it has taken my a while to collect the words. Your mum was such a kind soul. She kinda adopted me after my mom passed. She will be very greatly missed by all who knew her. I am always here for you no matter what you need. Love you so much. - Posted by: Chrissy Van Somer (Family) on: Mar 31, 2018

  • When I moved to Winnipeg 20 years ago and became involved with the cat fancy one of the first people I met was Barb. She was always ready to help the cat club in any way. Her knowledge of airline movements and the airline reservation system saved the club much aggravation and money when it came time to arrange the transportation of judges for the annual cat show. Her annual regional awards dinner presentation was something all looked forward to, She was always available to new club members and particularly to the executive when experienced advice was required. She will be missed. - Posted by: Robert Jacobs (Friend) on: Mar 23, 2018
