ELIZABETH HUNTER MCGUIRE (nee LORD) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth McGuire on Monday, March 12, 2018 after a tenacious battle with cancer. Born July 2, 1947 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Liz was a devoted and loving daughter, sister and mother who also became a scientist, teacher, dancer, gardener, volunteer, traveller, and joyful singer. Liz was predeceased by her mother Elizabeth Merle Lord, and survived by her father Harold Murray Lord, brothers Rick (Gloria) and Peter (Linda), her sister Alison, and her children Sean, Patrick (Heather), Meghan (Darren), and her grandchildren Rohan, Cormac, Freya, Leeam and Marlowe. Liz earned her Bachelor of Science at the University of Manitoba in the 1970s and did lab work before working as a stay-a-home parent. During that time she managed to fit in volunteering, Junior League meetings, sorority get-togethers and Tupperware sales, as was fitting for the early 1980s (along with her mom-perm). Liz excitedly returned to university in her 40s to complete a Bachelor of Education and then spent most of her professional career teaching at Ralph Maybank School. Liz was a woman on the move with countless interests. She shared her love of art through teaching watercolours at the South YMCA. She built and maintained butterfly gardens for her beloved monarchs (and would show you the pictures at the slightest provocation). She went out to the Legion hall on Friday nights to dance the foxtrot or cha-cha with anyone that would take a spin with her. She organized season tickets to MTC and dinners beforehand with her close friends, teaching compatriots, and anyone else she could gather. But a special part of her life was making a joyful noise by singing with her sisters in the Women of Note choir. Liz spent days, weeks, months and years at her family's Granite Lake cabin, most times with her sister Alison, her children and feral, but delightful, grandchildren. Anyone would know how proud she was of her spectacular children but her true happiness shone when taking her grandchildren to Fort Whyte to go dip-netting or slide on Richardson's Run or simply to sit, read and hold them close. Wid-woo/Liz/Mum/Mimi was endlessly kind, loving, and patient. Her infectious energy, positivity and generosity will be dearly missed by all those whose lives she touched and welcomed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba. A celebration of Liz's life will be held at Thomson Funeral Home on Broadway, Sunday, March 18 at 1:00 p.m.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Liz was a dear friend of my daughter Natalie, having taught together at Ralph Maybank. Please know that she made such a difference in her life. Liz used to go on countless walks with her along Churchill Drive, always the mentor, coach and cheerleader. Thank you for sharing this remarkable woman with us. • Liz (we always called her Lizzie) was a terrific friend for over 50 years. Even though we have lived in different provinces for 40 years we always enjoyed each other's company whenever we got together. Her laugh, sense of humour and genuine kindness still make me smile just to think of them. I will truly miss her and the good times we shared. Sean, Pat, Meghan, Alison and Mr Lord I know you will miss her so much as will all of us who knew her. Liz cherished her grandchildren and was so proud of them, I hope they know and can remember how much she loved them. A great loss! - Posted by: Beth Brathwaite (Friend) on: Mar 29, 2018

  • I was very saddened to hear of Lizzie's passing. She was a good friend to my mother Beth and I have many fond memories of her over the years, most recently when she came to visit Victoria in the summer of 2013. She was so good at cuddling my new baby daughter and me for that matter - she gave the best hugs. Thinking of your family during this difficult time and smiling remembering fond memories of Lizzie over the years. - Posted by: Kathryn Allan-Kwasnica (friend) on: Mar 23, 2018
