JANICE MARGARET VIRTUE (nee KIRBY) September 7, 1942 - March 13, 2018 It is with heavy hearts, but warm memories, the family announces Jan's peaceful passing after a lengthy illness. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 55 years, Rex; children Brad (Alanna) and Lori (Ian Campbell); grandchildren Alyssa and Garrett; sisters Maxine (Norm) Schmidt and Cathy (Barry) Wallin; brother-in-law Jim (Twyla) Virtue; numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her father George (Edna) Kirby; mother Winnie Kirby; and infant sister Audrey. Born in Elkhorn, MB just minutes before her twin sister Maxine, Jan was raised on the family farm in the RM of Archie, MB. She was an active member of 4-H and CGIT. She moved to Moosomin, SK to complete high school and it was there that she met her best friend and love of her life, Rex. After graduating, Jan moved to Brandon, MB where she completed the Teacher Training Course, and then moved to Beulah, MB to teach until her marriage in 1962. Her journey in life included moves within Manitoba to McCreary, Rivers, the Canadian Forces Base at Obodo, Pinawa, Strathclair, Wawanesa, and Winnipeg. While raising her family, Jan successfully completed her 'PHT' (Putting Husband Through) by helping Rex further his education. She enjoyed volunteering at the Pinawa Library and helping coordinate VIP transportation for events including The Brier, Grey Cup, Indigenous Games, and National Figure Skating Championships. The first Manitoban to use computerized accounting in figure skating, Jan received the Order of Sport Excellence for her 25 years as a volunteer accountant for Skate Canada. A true homebody, Jan loved spending time with family, playing cards and computer games. We relied on her fantastic memory to provide details on family history or past events, and her phone calls to share family updates will be missed. She wanted people to celebrate her life with a party and to have a drink of scotch in her memory. The family would like to thank Dr. Gavin Roche, as well as the staff at Grace Hospital for their compassion and excellent care. In keeping with Jan's wishes, an event to honour her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please do something kind for someone, or if you feel really sorry for Rex, send fresh baking! Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • First, I am very sorry to hear of your wife's death. I prayed for you and your family when I found her obituary. May your grieving be alleviated by the memories you shared. It was National Teacher's Day a few days ago and on a whim, I Googled your name, as the year you taught me Grade 5 at CFB Rivers, was one of my favourite years in school. I remember you as firm and fair and always expecting the best, which I hope I gave... at least most of the time. After careers in retail management, financial planning, I finally paid attention to God's call and am now a United Church minister, living in Nova Scotia and haven't been back to Manitoba since we were transferred out in 1970.
