EVANGELOS (GEORGE) DELIOS
Born: Feb 12, 1930
Date of Passing: Mar 12, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEVANGELOS (GEORGE) DELIOS February 12, 1930 - March 12, 2018 Evangelos (George) Delios passed away peacefully at 88 years of age, at Oakview Place Personal Care Home, with his beloved wife of 56 years, Sylvia, by his side. He is survived by Sylvia; his daughters, Stephanie and Michelle; son, Andrew; granddaughters, Paetra and Alexandra and grandsons, Cole, Rhys, George, Nico, Andrew and Mylo. He was predeceased by his parents, Marika and Constantine, his papou; and his sister, Zizi. George was born in Cairo, Egypt and grew up in Alexandria where he lived with his papou, aunts, mother and sister. He spent his first three decades living in an international community where he became fluent in five languages. George trained as a medical doctor, with an initial specialization in anesthesiology at the University of Alexandria. In 1959, he moved to Great Yarmouth, England to take a position as a resident in anesthesiology at the Great Yarmouth General Hospital. He met Sylvia shortly thereafter who was working as a nurse at the hospital and they married on July 14, 1962. After the birth of their first two children in Norwich, England, they moved to Trondheim, Norway in 1965 and then to Winnipeg, Canada in 1966. George took a position in anesthesiology at the Deer Lodge Hospital and the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. He was very sociable and was a friend to everyone. As an anaesthesiologist, his patients were usually in a deep sleep and he missed interacting with them. For this reason, he left anesthesiology in 1969 and established his family practice at the Westwood Clinic where he practiced for 20 years. During his time in family practice, George became a much-loved member of the community. He made numerous friends amongst his patients. He was more than a doctor to his patients, he was their close friend and confidante. George loved delivering babies and was a constant presence on the labour and delivery unit. Family practice was his passion and he spoke fondly of being part of his patients' lives. George could not go anywhere in the community without running into his patients, colleagues and friends. A 20-minute visit to the grocery store often took two or three hours because he would always stop to chat. George exited life in family practice in 1988. He and Sylvia worked for the Foreign Service in Ottawa, New Delhi, Vienna and Ottawa again. They loved to travel and explored many countries during their time overseas. In 1997, George retired and returned to Winnipeg with Sylvia to live close to their two daughters and their grandchildren. Dad's last years were difficult. He was afflicted with Alzheimer's disease which gradually eroded his confidence, personality, cognitive ability and physical health. His family respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, you kindly make donations to the Alzheimer's Society so that they may continue their research and hopefully eradicate this debilitating and cruel disease. Special thanks to the support staff and 3rd floor staff at Oakview Place notably Michael, Natalie and Phil for their kindness and compassion during Dad's stay and in his final hours. Thank you to Donna who was a great support to Mum and Dad. Her weekly phone calls to her father, Manoli, George's good friend, always brightened his day. In keeping with George's wishes, there will be no service. Wojcik's Funeral Chapels & Crematoriums, 2157 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg 204.897.4665 www.wojciksfuneralchapel.com

Just found out about the passing of Dr Delios. He was the best, always had time for his patients with a happy smile. The last time I saw him was at the Grace Hospital Chapel for Dr Garwood’s tribute. Stephane, I forgot about you until I read the obits. You worked at the base, the sad part as we get older, we lose some memory. Deepest condolences Bena Sly - Posted by: Bena sly (Family physician ) on: Apr 09, 2018

I was so sorry to hear of George's death. My father thought so highly of him and enjoyed his company so much. He never seemed to be without a smile and I always felt he was truly interested in talking to me (and to everyone!). He stood out as such a genuinely nice man. My condolences. - Posted by: Jill Wilson (Friend (daughter of Alex Wilson)) on: Mar 27, 2018

To Sylvia and family My deepest condolences on the passing of your beloved George. He was a friend to everyone he met and I have the fondest memories from New Delhi, India where he made such a difference in people's lives. He was more than a doctor, he was everyone's friend, confidante, a father figure who brought reassurance when people were sick or suffering from culture shock. His smile was contagious. He will be missed. - Posted by: Marie Berube (Friend) on: Mar 23, 2018

Stephanie....my deepest sympathies to and your family. I will always remember your Dad as one of the most compassionate, kind and supportive employer and friend. His amazing energy and professionalism was so impressive, and unforgettable. I share your sadness in losing your Dad. It will be 2 years this May, since I lost my Dad to Vascular Dementia. There is not one day that goes by where I don't think of my Dad. May each day that passes heal the pain you feel and May your precious memories comfort you and your family. I hope and pray a cure will be found, as well, to protect our loved ones and families to come from this terrible disease. Hugs to you, my friend. He cared for my papou when he was sick in the 80s, explained to me as a twelve year old what cancer was, and helped to inspire me to become a doctor.
