EUGENIE NETTIE HRYSHKO (nee YAKUBCHAK) March 28, 1935 - March 16, 2018 Peacefully, with family at her side, our mom passed away on Friday, March 16 after a brief battle with cancer. Eugenie grew up on a farm in Ethelbert, MB and was the youngest of nine siblings. She moved to Winnipeg at age 15 to attend business college. There, she met her future husband Victor. Our parents were married for 42 years until Dad passed away in 2000. After taking a break to raise her kids, Mom returned to work as a legal secretary until she retired at age 62. Our mom was always our number one cheerleader who supported us in everything we did. She had the patience of a saint and then some. She was the kind of person who always put others first. Our mom loved being a Baba and spent plenty of time being a great one. When she was with her grandkids it was like nothing else mattered. They'll always remember the time they spent visiting, playing cards and sharing candy together over the years. As everyone grew up and moved away, Baba gave all of us the special gift of spending every Christmas together. Eugenie loved sunshine, flowers and bowling. She had a great circle of friends who loved to play cards, laugh and travel together. She volunteered at the Red Cross and Elections Canada and helped make thousands of perogies at her church. In her later years, our mom was blessed to have a special relationship with Gerald Ostry. They spent countless evenings playing heated games of scrabble, sharing dinners and laughing lots. They also enjoyed going out for concerts, events and driving to Lockport together. Eugenie was predeceased by her husband Victor, her siblings Kay, Steve, Alice, Wilma, and her grandson Timmy. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Linda (Murray), Larry (Michelle), Diane (Gary) and Gayle, grandchildren Adam, Daniel, Megan, Hannah, Jaclyn, Haley, Dana and Amy, sisters Mary, Pearl (Jack), Helen and Emily, many nieces and nephews, and is especially missed by Gerald. Our family would like to thank Dr. Kristin Heinrichs for taking wonderful care of our mom for many years. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, March 21, at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • My recently deceased Mom and her Sisters had such tremendous respect for your Mom, and looked at your Dad like the brother they never had. He really was their "office brother" at Independent Fish Company for so many years that he worked there. Such good, kind people! - Posted by: Victoria Lehman (Family friend) on: Feb 20, 2020

  • Thinking of you all. It is hard to loose someone you have loved all your life. I am glad you could be with your mom during her final days. Your mom was always so nice to me back when Gayle invited me over for family barbecues and such. - Posted by: The Burgess family (Friends) on: Mar 31, 2018

  • Linda, Larry & family: We were very sorry to hear about your Mom's passing. No matter what age we are, it is always difficult to lose a parent. Please accept our sincere sympathies at this difficult time. - Posted by: Doug & Rosemarie Prokipchuk (Schoolmates) on: Mar 21, 2018
