ALAN WILLIAM CUTHBERTSON May 30, 1924 - March 15, 2018 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Al Cuthbertson, at Grace Hospital, on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at the age of 93. Al was predeceased by his parents, Cuth and Pearl, brother Jim and son Bruce. Born on May 30, 1924 in Edgerton, AB, to John Hugh Cuthbertson and Lila Pearl Cuthbertson (nee Ranks), the oldest of four children. His youth was spent in several towns in Saskatchewan and Alberta, settling in Red Deer, where he graduated from high school. Al is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jean Cuthbertson (nee Webber); sons, Douglas (Bonnie), Dale and Brent (Georgia); grandchildren, Murray, Matthew, Lynn, Michael, Michelle, Megan, Lauren, Brandon and Alyssa; great-grandchildren, Julian and Jonty, and many other friends and relatives. Al joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) when he was 19 years old, going overseas on the Queen Mary in August 1943 as Sgt. Air Bomber. He served on three separate squadrons as Air Bomber on the Lancaster. He returned to Canada in June 1945, where he was discharged from the RCAF in October of that year. After considering university, he instead chose to follow in his father's footsteps and became a banker with the Bank of Montreal (BMO) in 1947. He spent 39 years with the bank, retiring as Audit Manager for the Manitoba and Saskatchewan Region. After the war, he settled in Red Deer, AB, where he met Jean Webber, a registered nurse and they married in April 1948 in Edmonton, AB. By 1959, they had four young boys and had lived in five cities in Alberta and Saskatchewan. They added five more cities to the places they called home, before settling in Winnipeg in 1975 and retiring from the bank in 1986. Upon retirement, Al took electrical training and spent over a decade volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. He had many hobbies and activities after retirement, including working for American Express, travelling, early morning coffee with friends and ice skating. Most of all, Al loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He took a genuine interest in everyone's lives and always shared a thoughtful perspective, a kind word and a loving embrace. A 43 year member of Westwood Presbyterian Church, Al's faith was the rock that saw him through good times and bad. His kindness, sweet demeanour, generosity, presence and patience touched everyone he met. The funeral will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018. A public viewing will be held at 1:00 p.m., with the service to follow at 1:30 p.m. at Westwood Presbyterian Church, 197 Browning Blvd., Winnipeg, MB. Interment and reception to follow. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • So sorry to read of the passing of Alan Cuthbertson. He flew with my father during WW2 when they were both with RAF 227 Squadron mainly based at RAF Balderton, Nottinghamshire. If any of the family do read this message. please contact me. I am able to offer some information of his time at Balderton. No doubt the family have a copy of 'Bomber Aircrew in World War 2 written by Bruce B Halpenny. At this moment we are trying to trace members of the crew that flew with P/O George Edge. It has been good to able to swap photos and the storied that we have been told back in the past.
