Date of Passing: Mar 17, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMICHELLE ALLISON BAILES It is with great sadness we announce the sudden and tragic passing of Michelle Bailes on March 17, 2018, at the age of 38, due to complications from a pulmonary embolism. Cherishing her memory are her father, Rick (Velvet), brother Cameron, uncles, Alan (Judy), and Paul (Linda), cousins, Kris (Hye-Kyung) and Koren, Joanna, Matthew and Jonathan, stepbrother Ken, stepsisters, Suzi and Megan, her precious niece Emma, Emma's mother Kelly, her goddaughter Brenley, and last but not least, where Michelle was concerned, her pampered cats, Scoop and Bandit. Michelle was predeceased by her mother Alison in 2003. Michelle was born in Calgary and raised in Winnipeg. She attended Kelvin High School and was awarded the gold medal for her first degree in Biochemistry at the University of Winnipeg in 2004. Michelle graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba in 2010, completed rural family medicine in Dauphin in 2012, and trained as an anesthetist in 2013. She worked at the Portage District Hospital and became a partner at the Portage Medical Clinic in 2014. Michelle was highly respected by staff and was a strong advocate for her patients. Michelle was an extraordinary enthusiast: passionate about travel, music, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, gourmet cooking, skiing with her family at Silver Star, and especially scuba diving, which she did as regularly and often as she could. A vibrant, vivacious, and loving person, Michelle lived life to its fullest and completely embraced times spent with those she loved. Her death is not only a great loss to her family and friends, but also to her cherished and beloved "medical family" in Portage la Prairie who fought so valiantly to save her, and who miss her profoundly. A celebration of Michelle's life will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Breezy Bend Country Club, 7620 Roblin Blvd., Headingly, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Portage District General Hospital Foundation, 524 Fifth St. SE, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3A8, the STARS Foundation, 155 West Hangar Road, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3Z1, or a charity of your choice. A tree will be planted and cared for my McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com 204-857-4021

What a wonderful, strong, inspiring woman. Michelle was our neighbor, our friend, and physician. She was woken up in the middle of the night, delivered our first child into this world and save my wife from a post partum hemorrhage. We often think of Michelle, and are absolutely grateful for her. She is someone who will never fade from our memories. Until we meet again Michelle. - Posted by: Cory Kloos (Friend, Neighbor, Patient) on: Sep 16, 2021

My deepest condolences to Michelle's family - especially, you, Cameron. Alison and I became great friends when we were both teaching nursing at the university of Manitoba. Our friendship continued after we were no longer at the U. and right up until her death. In those years, I came to know both of Alison's children - especially Michelle. Over the intervening years, I have often wondered what paths the lives of both Michelle and Cameron took. I was so saddened to read of Michelle's passing. If you wish to be in contact with me, Cameron, please feel free to call. - Posted by: Shirley Watts (friend) on: Apr 04, 2018

Michelle was one of those amazing people that was able to make you feel like a kindred spirit and even though there were periods when we didn’t see her, it was just like we had never been apart when we did get together. We are happy that she was able to fulfill so many of her life dreams but are sorrowed because we won’t have more adventures to hear about. Her love of life was all encompassing. When my mother, Doris Lewy was in the hospital a few years ago, it was wonderful to have Michelle be so attentive and be an advocate when needed. She will be missed. I first met Michelle when she became my sister's doctor in PORTAGE HOSPITAL. She was so kind to her as my sister had alcohol problems, in which other doctors just wanted to send her home. But Dr.Bailes was determined to keep doing test until she found out what was wrong, and found that my sister had cancer. For Eight days Michelle would visit with her, even when her shift was done. Just to to have a chat or to make sure she wasn't in so much pain. After my sister passed April 29th 2017. She also became my doctor and helped me so much to deal with my pain and heartache of losing my sister, up until my last visit to her January. I still can't believe she is gone. Such a kind ,compassionate beautiful young lady I will miss her. My heart goes out to the family as( Michelle told me at every appt, as I grieved for my sister. "EACH DAY IS GOING TO GET EASIER, JUST THINK OF THE GOOD MEMORIES YOU KEEP CLOSE IN YOUR HEART" AND I DO THAT EACH DAY.❤ - Posted by: Shirley wilkinson (Patient) on: Mar 26, 2018
