Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELENA (HELEN) JANOWER (nee SMERCHANSKI) Peacefully on April 2, 2018, at the Gimli Johnson Memorial Hospital, with her family by her side, the family announces the passing of their beloved Mother and Baba. Helen passed away at the age of 91. Helen was born May 5, 1926 in the Franklin Municipality, Manitoba. She will be deeply missed by her daughter Barbara, sons Allan (Charlotte) and Alex (Christine), her granddaughters Amber (Ryan), Ashley (Dana) and Samantha (Simon), sisters Mary O'Staff, Pauline Huedorbourck (George), brother Nestor (Rose) Smerchanski, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband William in 1993, son Robert in 2018, her parents Joseph and Nettie Smerchanski, brothers Willie and Peter Smerchanski. At a very young age she moved from Gardenton to Winnipeg with her sister Mary to start work. Helen worked at St. John's College and at Canada Packers. On November 20, 1948 she married the love of her life, William. Together they farmed on the family farm in the Hayek District where they raised their family. Her granddaughters were her pride and joy. Helen's enjoyment was her garden, flowers and knitting. Helen loved to cook for her family and she enjoyed canning fruit and vegetables. She also enjoyed many conversations with family, friends and neighbours. In July 2017, with her son Robert, she moved to Arborg Assisted Living. She enjoyed her stay there until her passing. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel in Arborg, Father Peter Chorney officiating. Interment will follow at the General Christian United Cemetery (Okno). Pallbearers will be Randy Smerchanski, Shaun Pylpiw, John Stebner, Simon Cutler, Ryan Ringler, Norman Janower. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the doctors and nursing staff of the Gimli Johnson Memorial Hospital for their care and compassion. Also, thanks to the home care workers and all the staff at the Arborg Assisted Living. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the General Christian United Cemetery (Okno).
