DOROTHY IRENE MCNABB (nee HANCOCK) On Saturday, March 31, 2018, with family at her bedside, Dorothy Irene McNabb quietly passed away at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Dorothy touched the lives of many people in her years. Her legacy of kindness is left to her family to carry on - Johnny, her husband for over 65 years; sons, Donald (Sally) and Gary; grandchildren, David, Kimberly (Nathan) and Gordon (Kayla); sister-in-law Lillian Hancock; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father and mother, Noel and Ethel Hancock; brothers, Reg, Bill and Doug; and her sister-in-law Elsie. She was born in Davidson, SK but her parents moved to Noble Avenue in Winnipeg when she was very young. Dorothy attended King Memorial Church, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the CGIT. She went to Lord Selkirk High School. Dorothy attended secretarial school and worked for Great-West Life Assurance Company, the Winnipeg Electric Company, which later became Winnipeg Transit, and Goodyear Tire. In 1952, Dorothy married John Gordon McNabb, who also grew up on Noble Avenue, and they settled in St. James. She left the workforce to raise their two sons, Donald and Gary. Dorothy supported and encouraged her sons in their education and was a member of the Parent-Teacher Association at Linwood School. The family attended Deer Lodge United Church where she was an active member. Later, she and John attended Sturgeon Creek United Church. Dorothy motored across Canada and into the U.S. on family vacations to visit with extended family and friends or simply to see the sights. She travelled to England with her mother and later to England and Europe with John. She and John enjoyed their trips to Hawaii and to California where she was able to pick an orange right off of the tree! She enjoyed sewing, smocking and crocheting, but she loved to knit! In addition to knitting for family and friends, Dorothy donated knitted goods to the Grace Hospital Gift Shop for 40 years and then to the Christmas Cheer Board to the end of her life. Dorothy loved to read and shared that with her sons, who are also readers. She often had to be patient to get a new book, since she could read much faster than her favourite authors could write! For many years, Dorothy bowled on Monday afternoons in a women's league at St. James Bowling Lanes. While she was never known to have curled, golfed, or played baseball, she loved to watch these sports on television. Jennifer, Tiger, and the Blue Jays have lost a loyal fan. Dorothy was a loving mother and grandmother. She never missed a school play, concert, or sporting event that her children and grandchildren participated in. While she never had her own 'Diane', she had to wait for a granddaughter to be born. She, along with John, were often busy helping older friends who needed help getting about or who just needed companionship. She always sent cards to family and friends for birthdays, anniversaries, and other occasions. All knew that she cared for and was thinking of them. A private celebration of Dorothy`s life will be held. If you wish to make a donation in memory of Dorothy, you are invited to make a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or to a charity of your choice. • Dorothy ("Mrs. McNabb" to me) was a wonderful and hospitable lady, and will be greatly missed. I spent many hours in the McNabb household through my growing-up years, playing pool, eating lunches, watching tv, engaging in the Pick-a-Pop debates ("Who drank the last black cherry drink?"). In many ways, Mrs. McNabb was a second mom to me. Wonderful times and memories. - Posted by: David Hatherly (Friend of Don (son of Dorothy)) on: Apr 07, 2018
