Born: Jul 01, 1942
Date of Passing: Apr 10, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryKENNETH EWEN MCDONALD July 1, 1942 - April 10, 2018 It is with shock and disbelief that we announce the sudden passing of our precious husband, dad, grampa, and friend at the age of 75. Ken was predeceased by his parents Mary and Ewen, in-laws Bill and Eve Lumsden, Aunt Flora MacDonald, brothers-in-law Bill Lumsden Jr. and Jim Smith, and many other aunts and uncles. Left to mourn his passing, cherished and loving wife Patricia (Pat), of 55 years, son Bill (Allison) McDonald, daughter Kim (Jim) Scott, dearly loved grandchildren Jim and Craig Scott and Melissa McDonald, along with dogs Mandy and Rocky, sister-in-law Jean Smith, niece Janine Smith, nephews Jim, Jeff (Shelley) Smith, and many other family and friends. Ken retired in January 1998 as District Chief (A) of the City of Winnipeg Fire Department and always said he loved his job to the end, but loved retirement even more. Ken will be remembered for his passion and enthusiasm in each and every aspect of his life. No matter what aspect of Ken's life he was devoting his attention to: his career as a firefighter; curling and playing hockey with his lifelong friends; walking his beloved dogs; taking pictures of the scenery and wildlife around him; embracing the true meaning of lake life at Otter Falls; or simply having long unforgettable conversations with his family and friends, Ken was defined by his energy and excitement. We'll greatly miss your conversations during long walks, sharing joint successes and milestones, unforgettable road trip adventures and those very precious morning breakfasts but we know that these memories will be forever in our hearts and we love you. If Ken touched your lives, please come and join us for a gathering of friends and family on Friday April 20, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the East St. Paul Legion on 3600 Devries Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Firefighter Burn Fund, Salvation Army or a charity of your choice in Ken's name. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

So sorry to hear about the loss of a wonderful man. I met Ken's daughter Kim and grandson Craig when I coached soccer and found them to be such a friendly, loving, and warm family. Later while talking with Kim we realized that her family's cottage was a few cottages down from ours. Kim always spoke so highly of her father and his love of sports. A few years later I would spot him at the Thrasher's hockey games and we would always take a few moments to talk to each other about the game and I eagerly listened to his perspectives and opinions. He had a fresh view and a great eye for the sport especially since he had no ties to the team.... just wanting to watch hockey. Therefore, I always valued his opinion as it was honest and passionate. The last few years I would see him at the cottage walking his dogs and we would stop to have a little chat. Both being dog lovers there was never any shortage on discussions on how wonderful it was to have the affection of "man's best friend". Kim and family, I hope your memories of your dad help ease the pain of his absence. He had such a zest for life and he will be missed greatly by anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. Take Care. I was sorry to hear of Ken's passing. He was always so energetic walking his dog down the road or working on some project in the yard. He always graciously helped us when we needed a tool or a hand with something beyond our skill. He was always happy to see us in the spring and we would chat about how the winter went and how our dogs are getting on. Peace be with you. Our condolences to Pat and the rest of thee family. We hope to see you this summer at the lake. Zoe - Posted by: Zoe Reimer (Neighbors from Otter Falls) on: Jun 02, 2018

Mr. McDonald spent a few years on the staff that coached me as I played hockey in my youth. Many years later our paths would cross from time to time as he would be out at the rink watching a hockey game or at the Legion for breakfast. He would always come over and talk with me and share a story or two and laugh that distinctive laugh that he had, that laugh that always put a smile on everyone's face. We would always talk hockey and inevitably he would ask the question "are you guys going to win it all this year." He would laugh and I'd tell him that's the plan and then in a sincere voice he would always say "good luck, keep doing what you're doing." Ken was an honest and sincere person who always had a great sense of humour and a kind word. My deepest condolences to the McDonald family on their loss. Our deepest sympathy to you, Pat and your family. We share in the loss of Ken and the shock of his sudden passing. He was a good friend, always ready to lend a hand. We have many memories of long ago spent as newly married friends - at Elmwood Curling Club, raising our families and sharing those experiences. And as the years passed, times spent at the lake; from morning drives to White Lake for breakfast, to great dinners together with lots of conversation and many laughs. Will not seem the same to travel to Wpg. without him being there. We will miss him. Jack & Linda, Coldstream, BC - Posted by: Jack & Linda Bernhardt (Friends) on: Apr 18, 2018

Hello McDonald family. I have been watching for Ken's obituary and have been thinking about you all. So lovely to read and find out more about him. What an accomplished life Ken has obviously had professionally and personally, filled with huge success and great love. What a beautiful picture of him. I was the one that was with you Pat when you were at yyc airport that day. I haven't forgotten you all and Pat and Kim (and rest of your family) are very much in my thoughts and prayers, along with my whole family. Prayers from YYC 💜 - Posted by: Fran Carelli (From Calgary ) on: Apr 15, 2018

It is great sadness that Joan & I heard the news of Kens passing.Ken & I had many talks meeting & walking his dog at the end of my driveway about lake life at the lake, some bad but mostly good. As far as I was concerned Ken was the MOST ambitious fellow on our block road always doing something in his yard, dock etc. I was always amazed how much that man never stopped working. I will greatly miss him & our chit chat meetings we had at the end of our driveway. REST IN PEACE KEN. - Posted by: Gerry & Joan Wiebe (Lake Neighbour) on: Apr 14, 2018

Dear Pat and family, I too was shocked and saddened by the loss of your loved one. Although it has been years since we have been in touch, I have fond memories of past times together raising our little ones. I can’t believe our oldest kids will soon be fifty. Please know that my thoughts are with you and the Smith family. Peace be with you. Lynda Jones and family. - Posted by: Lynda Jones (Acquaintance ) on: Apr 14, 2018
