DENNIS DUNCAN HAY August 24, 1945 - April 15, 2018 Peacefully, with his family at his side, Dennis passed away after a short fight with Cancer on Sunday, April 15, 2018, at Riverview Health Centre, at the age of 72 years. Left to cherish Dennis' memory are his wife of 52 years, Donna (Dixon); sons, Kirk, (Katrina and Katelyn (Austen) Carrie) and Kevin (Bernice) Morgan Colby and Emily; daughter Kim, (Kailer, Owen (Emilie) Bryce) and great-grandson Blake; brother Fred (Hilda); brother-in-law, Dennis (Susan); sister-inlaw, Mona Chaves; as well as many nieces and nephews who are going to miss their Uncle Dennis. He was predeceased by his parents Clara and Duncan Hay; in-laws Gordon and Mona Dixon, and brother-in-law, Jorge Chaves Dennis was born in Portage la Prairie and grew up on the family farm in Austin, MB. At the age of 15 the family moved into Winnipeg and he attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. He then went to British Columbia to work for a short time returning to Winnipeg and his family where he worked at John Woods and then Inland Cement. On January 15, 1967 Dennis joined the Winnipeg Fire Department and after 36 years of service he retired at the rank of Captain on January 26, 2003. Den loved his job and to him if you loved your job there was no such thing as stress. So to his way of thinking he had a stress free job. His meal of bacon and eggs will be remembered by many. He was a man of integrity no matter what he was involved with and was respected by many Den, Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle Friend, were many of the names he went by. His grandchildren who he loved dearly and who loved him, will remember him as the grandpa who never missed an activity or sport that they were in and was always cheering them on. He will be missed by many from near and far. On Monday, April 23, 2018 Dennis' funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2400 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg with Chaplain Mark Young, presider. The family would like to thank CancerCare Manitoba and Riverview Health Centre for their care and compassion in Dennis' brief battle. The family would also like to thank the UFFW for all their support throughout this trying time, and the many friends and relatives who have been by our side. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Firefighters Burn Fund or charity of choice is greatly appreciated. • Both Eileen and I are saddened to find out today that Dennis has left us. We want Donna and her family, and also Fred and Hilda and family, to know they are in our thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow. We write this note to assure them we are thinking of them at this time, and that we want to support them in getting through this sad period. We have not been close the past few years but recall meeting them at curling rinks over a few drinks having a lot of laughs, and pleasure talking about happenings in the past involving curling and hunting. My fondest recollection of Denny was as a child on the farm in the area around Sidney. I knew him from birth. He was a little rascal, with a froggy voice, and bright eyes and wide smile. Always full of mischief and laughter, causing his father Dunc, and mother Clara, to wonder what he was going to get into next. He was loved and liked by all. A good man who will be missed. - Posted by: Eileen and Frank Sim (Distant cousin) on: Apr 19, 2018

  • I feel like I know Dennis very well, though I've only known him a short time. Kim has regaled me with stories of his greatness as a father. The times we have met in person are memories I will enjoy for my lifetime. I hope the grief you all have to live through will be mellowed by your good memories of him. - Posted by: Charli (Family Friend) on: Apr 18, 2018
