He died peacefully, at home, April 2, 2018, after a long battle with colon cancer. Born December 22, 1939 in Selkirk, MB, he was the second youngest of nine children born to James and Bessie Still. His early occupations included fur trade clerk with the Hudson's Bay Company, radio operator, fire ranger, and land surveyor. He had a 28-year career with Canadian Forestry Service (Insect and Disease Survey Unit), and then joined Alberta Forest Service until retiring in 1996. Gary was a talented illustrator and was known for his caricatures. He was passionate about genealogy and shared his research on his website, www.redriverancestry.ca. Memorial service will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

My condolences to the family of Gary Still. I just found his webpage through a family history search (Harper ancestry), and am saddened to learn of his recent passage. I gleaned a huge amount of information on his page and hope it remains for future ancestry buffs to examine. I learned enough from his pages to keep me searching for the rest of my life. His humour was terrific and I enjoyed reading about his escapades. I only wished that I had found this great historian sooner, and he was still here to ask for more. :( Truly a great storyteller that will be missed. Finding his treasures through the Red River Ancestry made my day. I'm very exited to share this with the rest of the Harper family. To his family, I say: thank you, and cherish his stories as I will.
