DOROTHY MYRTLE AUSTIN 1924 - 2018 Dorothy passed away peacefully April 25, 2018, at her residence. She grew up in Virden, MB with her parents and five siblings, and is survived by brothers, Alf and Bob McMillan, and the McMillan clan of many nieces and nephews. After moving to Winnipeg to work, she met and married Fred Austin (deceased) and raised three children: Ken, Doug and Gord Austin. She is survived by them and their spouses and children; sister-in-law, Grace, brother-in-law, Bob (Heather) and their children. Mom loved camping and picnics. Several times when we were kids Mom and Dad held a picnic with us and lots of our neighbourhood friends at Fraser's Grove Park. Dad took up sailing when he and Mom were in their 50s. Mom went along because Dad was keen on it, but she grew to love it too, in their dinghy or friends' yachts at the Gimli Yacht Club. She was a quiet, kind person with a positive attitude as remarked on by many in her later years. We'd like to thank the kind and loving staff of Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home for their care of our mom. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or any charity of choice. Everyone is welcome to join in a celebration of Dorothy's life at 11:00 a.m. on May 10 at Springs Church Conference Centre, 725 Lagimodiere Blvd.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Upon graduation from high school in Portage la Prairie I moved to Winnipeg to start college at Success Business College. I needed a place to stay. My high school typing teacher (Ms. Breuder) knew of Dorothy and Fred from John Black United Church. They were empty nesters with a room for rent . We met and bonded only to find out Dorothy's brother in law Bob was married to my Mom's best friend. The deal was sealed and I room and boarded there for a year. Dorothy was soft spoken but you knew she was the boss. She calmed me down before many exams. She was a very good cook....Spanish Rice one of my favorites. My condolences to the family. Ken, i think i met you a couple of times and Doug as well. One of you took me for a motorcycle ride. Sincerely Carolin Rice (nee Henry). - Posted by: Carolin Rice (Former Boarder) on: Apr 30, 2018

  • My dad, Daniel Hildebrand and Dorothy sat together at they are meal table at Meadowwood for well over a year I believe. While I do not live in Manitoba, I came to know Dorothy when I would come to visit. My memories of her are of her gentle nature and her smile. I will miss seeing her. - Posted by: Jeannie Kemp (Daughter of Daniel Hildebrand ) on: Apr 28, 2018

  • Dorothy and my mother, Mary Hampson were close friends for many years until health made it difficult to visit or communicate. Both Fred and Dorothy went out of their way over the years to make mom part of their lives after mom was widowed, and their compassion made a difference. Mom passed in January, 2018 at the age of 100 years and often recalled her good friend Dorothy. May they be united in friendship once again. - Posted by: Len Hampson (Son of a dear friend, Mary Hampson) on: Apr 28, 2018
