JOHN GUNN 1925 - 2018 Our dear dad and grandfather died on April 20, 2018 on Gabriola Island, BC. He spent his last weeks looking over the ocean, enjoying visitors, the odd dram of Scotch and Downton Abbey. Dad was born and raised in Winnipeg, attending St. John's-Ravenscourt School and enjoying many times at the Winnipeg Winter Club and the Lake of the Woods. With his young family he moved to Vancouver in 1964. As a young man he lived in London and in mid-life, spent three years near New York City. He talked about those places the rest of his life and went back many times. He loved to travel and even in his last weeks was optimistically planning a train trip across Canada. Similarly, right to the end he told visitors he was getting better day by day. He enjoyed being an electrical engineer and worked at his own consulting company into his early 70s, and was also a natural teacher, coaching his kids through math in particular. As a young boy, Dad was drawn to the piano and he played, by ear, all his life, bringing joy to many. Even when he couldn't walk, he had his bed rolled to the piano so that he could play. He was married to Fran (Abbott) for nearly 55 years and he loved her dearly. After he retired they were nearly inseparable. Together they created a warm home and a garden oasis that family and friends loved to visit. Dad was a gentle man with an inquiring mind who was interested in people and ideas right to the end. He touched everyone with his big, beautiful smile. Dad leaves behind four children, Libby, Shelagh, Alex and Cynthia and granddaughters, Jennifer, Isla and Rowan. We will miss him tremendously.
