MARK ROBERT THOMAS ADKINS On May 11, 2018, Mark Adkins, age 43, passed away peacefully, in his home, in Bronxville, New York. Mark is survived by his wife, Wendy Sigurdson, his sons, Jakob (Jake) and Rylan (Rye), his parents, Bob and Nancy, his brother Sam, wife Danielle and children, Avery and Marielle; his brother Matthew, wife Sarah and children, Maxwell, Scarlet and Grace; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mark was predeceased by his grandparents, Bill and Lorna Adkins and Thomas and Margaret Cundall. Mark was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on October 29, 1974. He grew up in River Heights, where he went to school and played hockey and baseball, and spent summers at Victoria Beach. Mark graduated from Kelvin High School and then went to the University of Manitoba, graduating top of his class from Robson Hall Law School. Mark articled in Toronto and completed his bar admission courses in Ontario and New York and was called to the bar in both jurisdictions. In 2002, Mark and Wendy moved to New York City where he continued to practice corporate law. Always excited to take on meaningful projects, in 2017, Mark seized on an opportunity to establish a New York office for McCarthy Tétrault LLP. As the Managing Partner of the new office, Mark focused his energy, imagination, and talents into the success of that venture. Mark's dream was cut short, but the vision remains and the roots of that office have been firmly planted. Mark was a great mentor and leader. He never took things for granted and truly appreciated the value of his clients, colleagues and friends. As part of his commitment to the law, Mark participated significantly in the development of his profession, attending and speaking at many events every year, across the United States and Canada. From the day that Mark and Wendy moved into their first Manhattan apartment, they fell in love with the city and Mark looked for ways to contribute. Never one for half-measures, he sat on the board of The Canadian Association of New York, participated in and supported the annual Terry Fox Run in Manhattan, volunteered his time and efforts as a board member of the Children's Museum of Manhattan, and raised charitable funds by completing six New York City Marathons. Mark was a hard-worker but he also loved down-time and having fun. He loved to relax by cheering on the Yankees or his beloved Winnipeg Jets. Dinner with Wendy and their friends with story-telling, laughter, mirth and lots of wine was a delight. Mark had a great sense of humour and terrific wit. He could make people laugh until they cried. Travelling, organizing and hosting parties and events, particularly bachelor parties for his brothers or trips for his mom to see theatre or his dad to watch the Masters, were passions, but his greatest fun was being with Wendy and his boys. Mark was an exceptional dad and loved doing everything with Jake and Rye. Backyard barbeques, boating and fishing on Lake of the Woods, watching Star Wars, or taking trips to their condo in Florida or back to Winnipeg were always special because it was family time. Mark loved music and theatre both as a player and a member of the audience. He was a talented guitarist and creative writer. As a teenager he started a number of bands, wrote, recorded and sold music, and even toured parts of Europe. He never stopped loving music and often played and sang with his boys. In lieu of flowers, we ask that people consider a donation to a charity of their choice. In honour of Mark, his family are hoping people will participate as part of "Team Mark" in the Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research in Central Park in New York City on October 13, 2018 or in Winnipeg on September 16, 2018. All friends and family are invited to Bob and Nancy's home at 210 Oxford Street, after 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 23, 2018 to celebrate Mark's life. There will be a private interment in the summer.

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • To the Adkins Family, I know that it’s many months later, but I just learned of Mark’s passing. Mark and I attended Robert H. Smith Elementary School. Mark was one of the best classmates anyone could ask for. He was kind, energetic, and funny. I have fond memories of going to the house on Oxford St. and watching The Karate Kid! Every time I see that movie I think of him. I wish to pass on my sincere condolences to Mark’s wife Wendy, their sons Jake and Rye, and the entire Adkins family. - Posted by: Patrick McInnis (Elementary School friend) on: Sep 17, 2018

  • Dear Wendy and boys.... my sincere condolences on Mark's passing. I just recently heard the sad news when talking to your dad. Living next to your family when you were growing up was such a treat... I've followed your path over the years .. and enjoyed all the updates your proud parents shared re your marriage to Mark, the births of your boys and your wonderful life in NYC. Mark will live on in your sons...and your memories will keep him with you, always. - Posted by: Tina Makar (Friend) on: Jun 07, 2018

  • Bob and Nancy, We are so sorry to hear about Mark. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. With Love, The Hebert Family - Posted by: Matthew and Amanda Hebert (Friends) on: May 30, 2018

  • Dear Adkins Family, We are so sorry to hear this news. The Adkins were our neighbours on Oxford Street. They were the most fabulous neighbours. Mark always had a smile on his face and had a quick wit about him. Sending loads of love and light your way - Cath & Kent - Posted by: Catherine Bell (Friend) on: May 22, 2018

  • Our condolences on your loss of Mark, whom you so loved and of whom you were so justly proud. I (Vic) only met him the one time when I was part of Premier Doer's entourage to Wall Street, and found him to be a bright, interesting and decent young man who with his family was setting down roots in the Big Apple, having just bought their New York home. New York's gain was our loss. We wish you the very best in this difficult time. Hugs, Leona and Vic - Posted by: Leona and Victor Schroeder (friends of Bob and Nancy's) on: May 19, 2018

  • Mark was a talented songwriter. I met him at the Blue Note when I was 16 and he was 19. We quickly started playing music together. He kind of got me going in the Winnipeg Music Scene back then. I played violin on his first album. And to this day, one of the lines in his song Cheshire Grin is my all time favourite line.... “like the fraying strings of a grabd piano I felt the song fall apart inside.” He is a beautiful soul and I am so deeply sorry for the loss of his presence to his wife, children, parents and siblings. I am just so very, very sorry. Sending love to to you all. Kristjanna Oleson - Posted by: Kristjanna Oleson (Dear friend through music back in the day) on: May 18, 2018

  • Mark and I were friends in high-school. I remember him as sweet, funny and generous. After high-school, I visited him in England and he took the time to really show me the town (London) despite the fact that he didn’t live there. In the intervening years, our exchanges became limited to exchanging a joke and compliments on each other’s kids during the holidays. Although I only know you through your photos, my heart aches for you Bob and Nancy. You have my deepest sympathies. - Posted by: Tetjana Ross (Friend/classmate) on: May 18, 2018

  • Dear Bob and Nancy: Please accept my sincere condolences with the passing of your son, Mark. I did not know Mark, but have seen many family pictures of him and his family, and enjoyed heartwarming stories told with love and pride by Mom, Nancy. I worked with Nancy for many years, and I know how proud she and Bob are when it comes to family. Please be strong for one another, and always keep Mark in your hearts.
