JACK SURES, CM, SOM 1934 - 2018 With deep sadness, but also with gratitude for a life well-lived, the family of Jack Sures brings the news of his death on Saturday, May 12, 2018, in Regina, his home for the past 50 years. Born in Brandon and raised in Winnipeg, Jack earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Manitoba, and his Masters at Michigan State University. His life and art took him around the world, from Winnipeg to Regina, by way of London, Japan, Grenada, and France. Jack was awarded the Order of Canada, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the 2018 Governor General Arts Award (the Sadye Bronfman Award for Excellence in the Fine Crafts), to name just a few. His works of art can be found in private and public collections around the world. Predeceased by his parents, Harry and Ann Sures, Jack is survived by his children, Ben, Tania and Nadine; his granddaughter Mila; his wife Cara Driscoll and her family; and his sister Trudy Zimmerman and her family. He is also mourned by his cousins, friends, colleagues and students. Jack was a vibrant, charismatic person who loved a good party, a good round of golf - and a shot of good scotch. Enjoy one in his memory. Donations in Jack's memory may be made to the "Jack Sures Legacy Fund", University of Regina, 3737 Wascana Parkway, Regina, SK S4S 0A2.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I was shocked to read today about the passing of Jack Sures. We were fellow students and fellow seekers in the commitment of our lives in art. I wanted to congratulate him on winning such and honor and such a grand award. The journey of a life through art only began in those early days at the U. of Manitoba, School of Art and through the years we lost touch. It is with great sadness and heaviness in the heart that I realize I could not congratulate him either through email or in person. I wish those who remain behind to keep his name and his beautiful work alive for all to see in the years to come. It us a great responsibility in this world which easily forgets. May his work flourish! Sandra Caplan Ciarrocchi - Posted by: Sandra Caplan Ciarrocchi (Friend from decades ago at the U. of Mantoba, School of Art) on: Aug 01, 2018

  • Jack was a close friend to my wife Pat and I when we were in art school together decades ago. He was a gifted artist and one of the warmest people we have ever known. It's good to read that his talent was widely recognized. - Posted by: Arnold Saper (Fellow student at U of M School of Art) on: May 19, 2018
