JEAN MARGARET HARRIS (nee MORRISON) Peacefully on May 15, 2018 Jean Margaret Harris, age 91 years, passed away at Vista Park Lodge. Forever cherishing her memory are daughter Leslie Marchenski (Bernie) (nee Von Kleist) and son Colin; grandson Andrew McLeod; great-grandson Evan Geddes McLeod, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband George, her daughter Lindsay McLeod (Bob), her brother and sister-in-law Colin and Evelyn (nee Reid) Morrison, and son-in-law Erik Von Kleist. Jean was born August 29, 1926 to Scottish immigrants Thomas and Agnes (Nicoll) Morrison. Raised in the West End (on Ingersoll Street), Jean attended Principal Sparling School and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. Musically natured, she went to Toronto to study Voice, Piano and Composition Theory at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Returning to Winnipeg, she lent her beautiful contralto voice to a number of choirs, including St. Paul's Anglican Church (Fort Garry), and the Winnipeg Philharmonic. More significantly she was a member of the Winnipeg Musical Comedy Guild where, as a member of the chorus in a production of Jerome Kern's Showboat, she met George Harris, her husband of 54 years. Jean was a member of Melrose Camp, Sons of Scotland and latterly, Clan McLeod Manitoba and the Winnipeg Robert Burns Club. On her own, in company with George, and with Colin, Jean made numerous trips over the past 25 years to Scotland and England, until her failing eyesight made such trips difficult. In compliance with Jean's wishes no formal funeral service will be held. A gathering for family and friends will take place at Desjardins Funeral Chapel Reception Centre, 357 DesMeurons St. on Saturday, May 26 between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jean's name to the charity of your choice. The family wish to thank the staff at Vista Park Lodge, and the Grace Hospital for their care of Mom in her final days. Desjardins 204-233-4949 1-888-233-4949 www.desjardinsfuneralchapel.ca

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I am very sorry for your loss. My earliest memories of life in Winnipeg include frequent get-togethers of our families on a regular basis. Aunt Jean set up and supervised fun kids activities in the basement of your home. I recall bobbing for apples for the very first time there, probably at a birthday party. I will come to the service on Saturday on behalf of my whole Smith family, who are unfortunately unable to attend due to the challenges of time and geography. May your fond memories serve you well to keep her spirit alive in you. Brian Hydesmith (Smith) - Posted by: Brian Hydesmith (nephew) on: May 25, 2018
