She left this world surrounded with the love of her family. Katica will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 68 years, Josip, daughters, Marica, Silvia (Tony) and Annie (Tim), grandchildren, Daniel (Christine), Ryan (Nicole), Kareem, Haleel and Norah (Travis), great-grandchildren, Mikiaya, Liam and Blake, as well as her extended family and friends in Canada, Switzerland and Croatia. Katica was predeceased by her parents, Barica and Lovro Benkovic, sisters, Jana Hren and Marija Ferko, brother-in-law Josip Ferko, and son-in-law Salaheddine Hidara. Katica was born and raised in Obrez, Croatia. She left Croatia in 1959 to join her husband in Canada who had previously immigrated one year earlier. Her first job was as a seamstress, then she was employed by the gas company working evenings as a housekeeping aide. In 1962, the family left Winnipeg for Cochenour, Ontario. There she cleaned houses. Then in 1964, the family returned to Winnipeg where she worked for Western Glove until she secured a position in the housekeeping department of Seven Oaks Hospital. She worked there for 14 years until her retirement in 1996. Katica was an active member of the Wellness Centre for 20 years. She had many interests such as cooking, baking, gardening and crocheting. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an active member of her parish and belonged to the Catholic Women's League. A special thank-you to Katica's private caregivers and the staff at Holy Family Home for the love and support they provided over the last two years. The family would like to thank the staff on the 3rd floor, Unit #6 of Seven Oaks Hospital for Katica's end of life care.
