JOHN ASHTON
Born: Oct 26, 1930
Date of Passing: Jul 02, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN ASHTON October 26, 1930 - July 2, 2018 This has been a sad week in our family. We lost our husband, brother, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, our rock, John Ashton. As we reflect on a life well lived we are both sad but proud too. John Ashton was born in Wales in 1930. He lost his mum at the age of four and dad at age sixteen. With the loving support of his sisters, Margaret and Betty he excelled at school. University was not an option due to finances but he attended evening school to become a chemist. In May, 1967 John came to Canada without a job in search for a better future for his family. He found a job in Thompson, Manitoba and brought over the love of his life, wife Nedra and sons, Steve, Martin and Alan. He later sponsored and helped many family members to immigrate to Canada. In Thompson he was active in the community and especially the Legion. He was particularly proud of establishing the Environmental Control Department at Inco. John was proud of many things, not the least of which was his Welsh roots. He was proud to be part of building Thompson. He was a proud Northerner and a proud Canadian too. Whether it was darts, bowling, target shooting or table tennis he always aimed to excel and did. He was always there to support his family and always proud of their endeavors. John was proud to be a scientist; a family tradition of engineers and scientists that continues to today. He was so proud of the family's public service in politics, medicine, government, engineering and the arts and never ceased to express it. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Nedra Ashton; sons, Steve Ashton (Hari), Martin Ashton (Karen) and Alan Ashton (Kate); grandchildren, Niki (Bruce), Alexander, Sarah, Jenevieve (Franco), Claire and Taylor; great-grandchildren, Leonidas, Stephanos and Elodie and on behalf of sisters, Margaret and Betty and family in Cardiff. We remember all he did for us, for the North and Canada. How he led the way by example. "John Ashton. Scientist. A life well lived. RIP. We will miss you." www.voyagefuneralhomes.com

Worked in Environmental Inco Manitoba Division for Mr. Ashton 1992/94. John was one fine man indeed, I liked him instantly, I met him, asked him if he is English and he replied.. I'm a Welshman! Great bloke indeed, a wise, intelligent man, one of the best. Rest in peace sir. Sincerely. Raymond George Hughes Trail, BC Canada - Posted by: Raymond Hughes (Employee) on: Jun 13, 2020

May he rest in peace. We lost our father a few months ago and Steve helped us through the tough time. John raised a great fighter for social justice and workers' rights. The greatest MLA Thompson has ever had. John will be sadly missed by his friends in Thompson and the grandchildren he was especially proud of, Hari and Alexander. Thompson has lost another pioneer and founding father his efforts in building the community is something his family should be proud of. - Posted by: Mann family (Steve Ashton's friend) on: Jul 10, 2018

I was fortunate to have John as my leader in INCO's new Environmental Control and Methods Development department in Thompson, Manitoba. He was a tremendous mentor and chemist who knew so many answers to so many complex questions. He was instrumental in spearheading groundbreaking smelter impact on the environment as well as epidemiological studies of hazardous gas, dust and noise exposures to workers in various areas of the facility. I would not be successful today without John's mentorship. John also was a talented Bridge player who taught the rest of us how to bid properly and play the hands. - Posted by: Steve Portelance (Former Co-worker at INCO from 1969 to 1980 ) on: Jul 08, 2018

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nedra, Steve, Martin, Alan and their families on the passing of John. The Ashton family have been great friends of the Stuart family for over 45 years and spent many days at the Thompson Lanes both bowling and volunteering. He will be missed but memories of our time spent in Thompson will always be with us. - Posted by: Bill Stuart (Family friend) on: Jul 06, 2018
