MADELINE CHABAI Madeline Alice Marie Chabai (Boisclair), passed away peacefully at the Palliative Care Unit of St. Boniface Hospital, on Thursday, June 28, 2018. She was just six days past her 76th birthday. Madeline was born in Teulon, MB and raised in Erinview, where her parents owned the General Store. Her family later moved to Winnipeg, which she enjoyed until she moved to Calgary, AB. The family came back to Winnipeg and she raised her children there. Later in life, she spent three years in Iqaluit, NU, until she came home for her grandchildren. Those who knew Madeline knew she loved to tell stories. She loved coffee (and coffee cake) with friends and family, catching up over life and exchanging anecdotes. She spent many summers in Grand Marias at her cottage, directly across from the Lanky's hot dog stand. She loved playing Yahtzee and Bingo, hand-making afghans and dishcloths for her loved ones, and baking her famous shortbread cookies. She is missed by her three children - Les (Kate), Jim, Danielle (Jeff); her former husband John; grandchildren, Diana (Jeremiah), Noah, Emily, Owen, many nieces and nephews, and several longtime childhood friends, all of which were very dear to her. She is predeceased by her parents, Onesime Boisclair and Florida Bernard; her stepfather Leslie Lanham; and eight siblings, namely Gertrude, Gerard, Maurice, Armand, Alphonse, Therese, Henry and Leo. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Charleswood Legion on 6003 Roblin Blvd., on Thursday, August 9 at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, friends can send donations to the Winnipeg Humane Society, where Madeline was a monthly donor. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at St. Boniface Palliative Care for their warmth and support.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I am so very sorry to hear of Madeline's passing. For many years I have been looking for many of my past co-workers. I worked at the Parkwest hotel in Charleswood, Man. with her and several others. I had the honor of being invited to her home and had babysat her daughter Danille. She was a wonderful person and I'm sure she is truly missed...again I'm so sorry that this took as long as I did in offering my condolences. - Posted by: Liz Kain (Friend) on: Jun 10, 2024

  • Madeline was a long time good friend for over 60 years. Even though I moved away we kept in close touch. I am sorry for her family. I believe they will miss her. They were all very close. I am very thankful for the many years of friendship but I know her health was failing in the last few years. I will cherish the many good memories we made together. Rest in peace dear Madeline. - Posted by: Rita (Castello )Sutton (Childhood friend ) on: Jul 07, 2018

  • From the day I moved in with Madeline in staff housing for the Navigator in Iqaluit, to the day we said good bye when she moved back to Winnipeg, from the visits in Victoria to the afghans she made for me, to the Chabai family recipes she shared with me, Madeline always held a special place in my heart. I loved hearing her stories about her kids and grandkids and how proud she was of all of you. She was truly a beautiful person and I will miss her. - Posted by: Tammy Taillon (Friend from Iqaluit) on: Jul 07, 2018
