Mike was born on November 21, 1930 at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was raised on the farm in Rembrandt, Manitoba and had an incredible work ethic. In those days, manual labor was a must and that did not stop Mike from a successful crop. He instilled in his children hard work will always pay off. Mike loved Ukrainian music and the violin. He mastered the violin strictly from his own ear and played in a band for many years at weddings and other functions. This is where he met the love of his life Leona. Mike and Leona married on August 7, 1954 in St. Benedicts Church, Camp Morton, Manitoba. They lived in Winnipeg for 15 years where he worked at Motor Coach Industries. When the opportunity arose to move back to the country, he accepted a job at Seagrams, now Diageo where he worked for many years before retirement. Mike mostly enjoyed his family and his many friends. He was very proud of all his children and grandchildren in all their own achievements and he had most joy watching his grandchildren Ukrainian Dance. His great friend John Petrowski was also very special to Mike as they enjoyed many rides together, they were like brothers. Mike also loved to travel to Las Vegas with Terry and Dorothy and John and Colleen. Many great times. Mike led a very healthy full life up until age 86. The last year of his life was challenging and many thanks to Dr. R.C. Patel, Sherri Gwizdak, the nursing and doctors at Gimli Community Health Centre and Selkirk Regional Health Centre. Many thanks to the home care workers, especially Peggy, Jocelyn, Gloria and Angie. Mike looked forward to their daily visits as they cheered him up. Dear Leona, Marilyn, Larry, Lorraine, Kathy and families! My heartfelt condolences go out to you as you lay your dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Mike to rest. As I am writing this, the Celebration of Life Mass will have just ended, and I am imagining you all at St. Michael's receiving all the love and support from all your family and friends! I wish that I could have been there with you all as well, but my heart, thoughts and prayers are there with you. I can't help but sit here and remember all the good times with Mike, his 'little' business with Dan, him playing the violins along with Len and Mike with their guitars, his little container of coins which he so proudly brought out when we would get ready to play '31'. It was always full, which meant he had been winning! Last, but certainly not least, as Darlene so aptly put it, he was such a generous and attentive gentleman, when we would already have eaten more than we should, he would say, "Have some more!" Memories are so precious, and nothing can take them away. Let us treasure them as we remember Mike with so much love and fondness. God bless you all! Uncle Mike will be missed greatly. He was a tremendous gentleman with a kind and generous heart. He was also a very attentive host during family get-togethers, ensuring all guests had enough food and drink. I really enjoyed hearing his stories from the 'good ol days' and what is going on in the news room at CNN. Glad Cheryl and I got to spend time with Uncle Mike a few weeks ago.
