ELISABETH (LISA) MARIA VIS (nee VERAART) July 30, 1933 - July 8, 2018 Elisabeth passed peacefully on Sunday, July 8, 2018 at the Misericordia Place Personal Care Home. Left to survive Lisa are her husband Henricus (Hank) Vis; children, Jacqueline Siver (Virchel) Rosemary Podwin (Barry), George (Michelle), Rita Vis Dube, Elisabeth MacCharles (Quentin) and James (Meghan O'Laughlin); grandchildren, Jennifer (Justin), Heather, Carolyn (Steen), Daniel (Alix), Matthew, Sara, Kira, Leanne, Jayden, Jaime, Riley (Casie), Lindsay, Julia, Adam, Brendan, Lauren; and great-grandchildren, Ariana and Austen. She is also survived by her brother Frans, and sisters, Anny, Gusta and Wies. She was predeceased by her parents, Cornelilus and Maria Veraart; daughter Judy, and sister in Canada Johanna Adriaansen. Lisa was born in Roosendaal, The Netherlands, and grew up through the war with her 13 siblings and then trained as a nurse before embarking on an adventure to Canada. Lisa travelled to visit her sister Johanna in Canada in 1956. She returned home briefly before deciding Canada would be her new home. During the first short visit to Canada, Lisa met Hank and later married him on June 20, 1959. She continued her nursing career at the Women's Pavilion Hospital in Winnipeg. Lisa and Hank quickly grew their family that became the focus of their lives. Education and activities were always important and with six children on the go, it was a busy life. She was selfless in her attention and care to her husband and children and all the stress we put upon her. In 1976 Lisa and Hank purchased the family cottage and it became the gathering place of the children and then grandchildren every summer. Lisa would recruit her children to pick blueberries with her, but the reward was the delicious pancakes. The cottage was the place she was able to spend the most time with her beloved grandchildren. Lisa was very close to her older sister Johanna and the Adriaansen family in Carberry, MB. The families spent many Christmases and summer barbeques together at the Carberry farm. Lisa also remained very close to her siblings and their families in Holland and over the years she visited home often. Lisa was passionate about her hobbies and sometimes compulsive. Scrabble and word puzzles were always close at hand and there are many Lisa handcrafted wool sweaters among her family and friends. Lisa's adventure in Canada ended the way it started, with Hank by her side. She passed peacefully and will continue her journey, now with God in Heaven. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 16, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place, Winnipeg. Interment will follow in Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue. Our family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care provided to Lisa by the staff of M2 Misericordia Place and Home Instead. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to Parkinson Canada or St. Amant Foundation of Winnipeg.
