NEIL EDWIN SARGENT Neil Edwin Sargent died July 4, 2018 at Misericordia Hospital in Winnipeg after a battle against acute lymphoma. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on October 14, 1945, and attended Oberlin College and the University of Chicago. In 1968 he became a Canadian citizen, settling first in Montreal and working as a university instructor. His specialty was mathematics, which served him in a subsequent career in meteorology. In the mid-1990s he moved to Winnipeg. He was an advocate of personal growth and an exemplar of principled self-reliance; he stuck to basics and, rather than compromise, devised his own workarounds to achieve goals. He thought deeply about all things, with unbounded curiosity. He loved exercise, vegetarian nutrition, and animal welfare. A longtime volunteer at Quagga Stray Cat Rescue in Winnipeg, he took pride in never missing a shift of work and often jogged or biked to and from the shelter in heat of summer and cold of winter. His parents were Herbert and Elizabeth Sargent. He is survived by a sister, Anita Parins, brothers, Kirk Sargent and Glen Sargent, Glen's wife Kathy and their daughter Sophie. No service was held. The family suggests donations to an animal welfare organization in his memory.

  • Neil was a kind and gentle man. I valued him as a friend and as an ever faithful volunteer at Quagga Stray Cat Rescue where we spent so many hours together, taking care of the cats, talking books, food and travel. My most sincere condolences to Neil's family and other friends. Daryl Kuhl - Posted by: Daryl Kuhl (friend) on: Jul 29, 2018

  • We would like to send our sincere condolences to Neil’s family. Neil was a very private man but he would always stop and say Hi when we would see each other out in the back yard. Rest In Peace from your neighbors Cecil and Sandy - Posted by: Sandy and Cecil (Neighbor ) on: Jul 28, 2018
