GEORGE EDMOND MARSHALL With sadness and a sense of great loss, George Edmond Marshall passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at the age of 88. George embraced life and intentionally challenged himself to achieve numerous goals throughout his life. His value for obtaining education at any age, was role-modelled by his return to university in his early 50s to achieve his Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Winnipeg, followed by his Masters of Public Administration at the University of Manitoba. Residing in Transcona for 45 years, George had a long career of serving his community. He began his political career as city councillor, followed by 35 years of service as a school trustee. At the young age of 85 George retired from the political life but his accomplishments will be remembered by a street named in his honour and a citizen bursary given out annually. In addition to serving his community, George worked for MTS and contributed to bringing electrical power to northern Manitoba communities and as a public administrator for 36 years, eventually retiring in 1986 to pursue full time political life. George had a passion for horse racing, although he seldom placed a bet. As a loyal Winnipegger George coached the Jets and the Bombers from the sideline of his recliner. George's competitive nature carried through to all aspects of his life. From playing cards with his wife to organizing family croquet tournaments, George's competitive nature made him a stickler for following the rules. Despite all his accomplishments, George was a family man first, he considered his roles as a loving father, granddad and husband the most important of his life. George will be sadly missed by his wife Florence; his four children, Jackie (Steve), Judy, Brian (Yvonne) and Bruce, granddaughter Kiersten; his sister Marilynn (Dennis), brother-in-law Ken, and Florence's children, Darin, Johanna, Nicole and Brock. He was predeceased by his first wife Frances, sister Eleanor (Phil), and parents, Willliam and Daisy Marshall. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. A celebration of George's life will be held at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Transcona on Wednesday, August 15 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow after the service. "You need to follow your own star" George Marshall

  • I have just learned of George's passing. We served in City government together for a number of years. I always liked working with George. He was dedicated to his local community and to his city, and gave a great deal of thought and consideration to the policy issues we dealt with during those years. Sincere condolences to George's family in your time of loss. Well done, good and faithful servant. - Posted by: Jae Eadie (former City Council colleague) on: Aug 18, 2018

  • Hi Jackie My sincere condolences to you and your family on the loss of your Dad. Mr. Marshall was my first hockey coach and was an inspiration to all of us young hockey hopefuls. He always had a kind word and encouraged all of us to try our best. I still remember the year end hockey party he hosted for our East End Playground C team. Over the years, I also would see and speak with your Dad whenever we bumped into each other at Shapes. He was a great man and had a positive influence on many people. I am honored to have known him. He will be missed but never forgotten. God bless your Dad. Sincere regards, Billy Sandulak - Posted by: Billy Sandulak (Student) on: Aug 13, 2018
