DR. ALDEN ROLFE TURNER We are profoundly saddened by Alden's passing on August 29, 2018. Alden was a devoted husband to Connie, his beloved wife of 22 years; proud father to daughters, Caitlin and Kelsey (Phil Connor), and grandfather to his precious grandchildren, Susanna, Lily and Kieran. He is survived by mother Sara, siblings, Martin and Carolyn, and mother of his children, Maria Gill. He was predeceased by his father, Dr. Robert Turner. Widely recognized as an impassioned and excellent teacher and scholar, Alden enjoyed a 32-year career as a Professor at the University of Winnipeg, where he taught modern American literature, screenwriting, and literary theory. Alden also made many administrative contributions, including Chair of the English Department and President of the University of Winnipeg Faculty Association. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and the innumerable students he taught within and beyond the classroom. Beyond his academic and professional achievements, Alden was a gifted musician, who also appreciated art, cinema, and literature. He invested much of his life imbuing his loved ones with that same deep appreciation. According to Alden's wishes no funeral will be held. Family and friends will gather at a later date to celebrate the brilliant and inspiring person so many people loved.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I knew Alden when we were both Lifeguards at Grand Beach in 1970. A few years later I saw him again and he related a wonderful story of his summer holiday in Majorca. That got myself motivated to travel to Europe for a great summer holiday also. - Posted by: james D geddes (Old coworker) on: Feb 28, 2020

  • I met Alden many many years ago on a summer trip I took to Canada from California. He was sweet and kind. I am so sorry to read of his passing and my deepest condolences to his mother Sara, brother Martin and sister Carolyn.. all of whom I still keep in my heart. - Posted by: Jayne Mobley Dunn (Friend of his mother Sara) on: Mar 03, 2019

  • I was privileged to have been one of Alden's many students at the U of W, in my case nearly thirty years ago. The attentive ways he listened to students and responded to texts have stuck with me over the years. I would not be the same sort of teacher without him. • I did not get to meet him ever but wish I had. Connie, you are such an inspiration and he must have been amazing for you to have chosen him as your one and only. Hugs - Posted by: Anita Munn (Friend from IMC) on: Sep 12, 2018

  • I am saddened to hear about Alden's passing. We worked together at the University on a number of projects and he was always determined and principled. He had many other strengths and virtues. I will miss him. Allen Mills - Posted by: Allen Mills (Friend and colleague) on: Sep 01, 2018
