LAURIE BLOCK In the final hours of August 29, 2018, on his own terms and with a peaceful spirit, Laurie Block passed away. Despite his struggle over the past six years, Laurie maintained his intelligence, sensitivity and sense of humour to the end, winning the hearts of all those in the care home in the same way he had endeared himself to friends and family throughout his life. Laurie leaves a marvellous legacy, a gift to us all. An award-winning writer and storyteller, Laurie's work appeared onstage, in Canadian anthologies and magazines and in three volumes of poetry, including a bilingual collection, and Time Out of Mind (2006), for which he received the inaugural Lansdowne Prize for Poetry. Laurie's family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff of the Simkin Centre Personal Care Home. Their thoughtfulness and compassion for both Laurie and the rest of us were strongly evident throughout his stay and during his passing. At Laurie's request, a Celebration of Life will be held mid-October. Notice of location and date will be announced closer to the event on the Prairie Fire website ( and its Facebook page. Donations in memory of Laurie may be made to a charity of your choice. Expressions of condolence and short stories about Laurie may be sent to NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Laurie‚Äôs memory lives large within many. He was generous with his talent and love for others. I am forever blessed that he chose to share a little with me. - Posted by: Albert Hajes (Friend) on: Sep 07, 2018

  • Laurie and I attended St. John's High School in Winnipeg and became lifelong friends. He was always a brilliant, humble man who viewed the world through the prism of his amazingly creative mind. I will fondly remember his infectious giggling laugh that often got us into trouble at school. Although we went our separate paths, we could connect in an instant when we spoke. I will miss my friend. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and were touched by Laurie. - Posted by: Jerry Katz (Friend) on: Sep 06, 2018

  • A truly gifted wordsmith and a wonderful, kind man. Deepest honour, Laurie - peace be upon you; thanks for walking with us. - Posted by: Paul Madryga (Friend of the family) on: Sep 01, 2018
