CARMELO BONGIORNO 1925 - 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carmelo Bongiorno at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 7, 2018 at the age of 93 years. He passed away peacefully with his wife, Lena, by his side. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Maddelena Bongiorno; his son Guy (Angie) Bongiorno; his daughter Enza Bongiorno; his granddaughters, Madeline (Mark) Smith and Joselyn Bongiorno; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Francesco and Carmela Acquisto; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Francesco and Beatrice Bullaro, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father and mother Gaetano and Vincenzina Bongiorno. Dad was born on April 25, 1925 in Casteltermini, Sicily, Italy. He lived in Italy until his 20s before moving to Belgium, where he worked in the mines for five years. After Belgium, he immigrated to Canada in 1952, where he settled in Winnipeg. His bride-to-be, Maddelena, immigrated to Canada from Italy in 1953 when they were married. Carmelo was a loving and devoted husband for 65 years. They raised two children together and instilled their Italian values. Dad was a very hard working man. Upon coming to Canada, he worked at various places in Winnipeg including CNR, Gypsom Lime, Maple Leaf Mills and he returned to CNR until he retired in 1990. Dad was a simple man and he enjoyed a simple life. He enjoyed gardening, wine making, listening to CJOB, and taking long walks. After retiring, Dad and Mom enjoyed many bus trips to the United States including Florida, Texas, California, New Orleans, Las Vegas and many other destinations. He was true to his Italian roots. He always enjoyed a good plate of pasta and homemade bread on a Sunday afternoon, or any other given day of the week. He would take pleasure in his meal by drinking his wine that he would make every September. He was very proud of his family, and he was happiest when he was surrounded by his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all his loved ones. Thank you to the staff of 5 North at the Grace Hospital for your care and compassion over the past 10 weeks. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in Mary Mother of the Church, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, with Father Kevin Bettens officiating. Family condolences will begin at 9:30 a.m. A luncheon will follow the mass. Pallbearers will be Mark Smith, Mike Acquisto, Frank Acquisto, John Bullaro, Mario Bullaro and Ralph Aiello. In lieu of flowers if friends so desire, donations in memory of Carmelo may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E. J. COUTU & CO.
