GILBERT SICOTTE It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend at the age of 78 years. Gilbert was predeceased by his father Roland Sicotte, mother Therese Sicotte-Mahé, step-father Frank Mahé, brother Jean Sicotte, father-in-law Maxime Rocan, mother-in-law Therese Rocan, and sister-in-law Jaqueline (Tom) Farrell. He is survived by his wife Louise (nee Rocan), son Grant (Renée), daughter Lisa, grandchildren, Danielle, Chantelle, Ian, Regan, brothers, Albert (Doreen), Marcel (Midge), sisters, Jeanette (Gerry), Madeline (Bob), Marie, brothers-in-law, Paul (Diane), Gerry (Colette), sister-in-law Jeanette, and many nieces and nephews. Gilbert was born and raised in St. Elizabeth, Manitoba and moved to St. Boniface. After three years in the United States Armed Forces, he left the military to get married. Gilbert and Louise became engaged and married shortly thereafter. Gilbert went on to real estate and in 1976, purchased Marion Autobody becoming owner-operator. Gilbert had "la joie de vivre". He was a carpenter, plumber, and electrician that would tackle anything; there was no project left unfinished. Gilbert had many passions in his life, but foremost was his love for his wife, children, and grandchildren. Gilbert's interests grew over the years including his love for the cottage at Bird River. Forever the nature enthusiast, he became a pilot to expand his uncharted territory to hunt and fish with his brother Albert, son Grant, and many fortunate friends and family who benefited, flying over Northern Manitoba. His greatest achievement was flying to Alaska with his brother Albert. Upon retirement, Gilbert and Louise were fortunate to become "Snowbirds" and travel to Palm Springs with friends who also doubled as family. Gilbert suffered with dementia for the past 19 months and had been a resident of Action Marguerite St. Vital. We would like to extend our gratitude to the friends and family who journeyed with us at this difficult time; we felt loved. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 264 Donwood Drive, Winnipeg, on Friday September 14 at 11:00 am, with Father Doss officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or to a charity of your choice. Rest in peace my dear! How you were loved. • Louise, Rob and I are so saddened to hear about the passing of our longtime cottage neighbor and dear friend, Gilbert. We have been thinking about you both ever since you sold. We remember the day we moved into our cottage and their was a knock at our door. It was Gilbert welcoming us to the neighborhood with an offer of some caribou or moose that he had hunted himself and wanted to share with us. Gilbert was always there to help us with anything we needed, even willing to help us take down some threatening poplar trees while he was well into his 70's. With our sincerest sympathy, Beth and Rob Garbutt and family. - Posted by: Beth and Rob Garbutt (Bird River Cottage next door neighbors) on: Sep 16, 2018

  • We are very sad to hear about Bert's passing. We just heard yesterday and our hearts go out to Louise, Grant, and all close family members. We have some wonderful memories of our time at Bird River, and I can luckily say that I had the opportunity to fly and fish with him and one of his best friends, Joe Boehner (my father-in-law). He was (and always will be) a kind, caring, and wonderful person. Stay strong, our thoughts are with you. All of our love. • Louise & family On behalf of Judy and I, please accept our deepest sympathy - Posted by: Gil Dumont (friend) on: Sep 13, 2018

  • My condolences to all of you for your loss. Gilbert was a man that I very much looked up to and respected, I shall miss him as well. As a professional pilot, there were very few private pilots that I would have trusted my own family to fly with, but his self taught skills were of the very highest standard, and he was the exception. And yes he did teach me the proper way to to dress out moose and caribou! - Posted by: Glenn Lovelace (Friend) on: Sep 13, 2018

  • We were neighbors at Bird River for decades. Though we did not socialize with Bert and Louise we would see them "out and about" and talk about various subjects... mostly about their family and ours, fishing and hunting. We were always amazed how a man of his stature could be so soft-spoken and "laid-back". Once you met Bert you knew he was not just a gentle man. He was a gentleman. - Posted by: Denis LeGros and Margaret Livingstone (Bird River friends) on: Sep 13, 2018
