ARNOLD KLAYH Arnold was born February 4, 1923 in Winnipeg and left us on September 7, 2018. He was the middle child of Austrian / German immigrants, John Karl Klayh and Kathryn Schick. Hard work, being a dedicated student, and a good provider were instilled at an early age. As a young lad he had an extensive paper route of 400 papers, a job he took very seriously much to the chagrin of his teachers. He reportedly left school well before last bell each day with his teacher yelling, "Don't you dare leave!" to which he replied, "Gotta go ... I'm a working man!" This job afforded him a new car at 16, a roadster with a rumble seat! Dad also trained in radio repairs which landed him a position as a radio artificer in the Second World War on two Canadian frigates, one called the Magog, the other the Waskesiu. After the war he married Jane Watson, a girl he met while delivering papers to her parents' home. Her mother thought he was a very good suitor. Jane and Arnold married in 1946 and had four children. Arnold furthered his education - first pursuing a law degree but years later switching over to a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Winnipeg. He had a varied career. He owned a T.V./radio repair shop, a motivational business, did public speaking for the Dale Carnegie Institute, and later settled into a position of Vice President of Sales at Fleming and Pedlar. As an avid sports enthusiast, he played briefly for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as a defensive end. He would tell his grandkids, "100 push-ups and the same for sit-ups every day is the key to staying fit!" Travel, curling, his cabin at Nutimik Lake, and serving on various boards at both business and community levels, such as Kiwanis and East St. Paul Curling Club kept him busy. Arnold, upon retirement, along with Jean moved to Nanaimo for 20 years and enjoyed the warmer climate, only returning to Winnipeg later to be close to family. Arnold was predeceased by his parents, sister Gertrude, brother Norman and his wife of 69 years, Jean. He will be remembered by his children, John (Bonnie), Keith, Karen (Barry) and Lisa (Ansis), 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the Maples Personal Care Home staff for their exceptional kindness and care they provided to Dad. Please join the family for a Celebration of Life at Birds Hill United Church, 2105 Burton Ave., Birds Hill, Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 1:00 p.m.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Uncle A always had a quick comeback and a laugh to remember. I always remember holiday dinner when he would put his pjs on and stand up at the top of the stairs and announce it was bedtime or at Nutimik when he would take his sailboat out and have the wind die down as he approached the middle of the lake and yell for someone to rescue him. We have had fun and interesting times during our time with him before he left us to join Auntie Jean. - Posted by: Janice Watson Janzen (Niece) on: Sep 29, 2018
