WALTER MELNYK August 2, 1926 - October 12, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our cherished husband, father, grandfather and brother, Walter Melnyk. Wally was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and grew up in the North End. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Katherine Melnyk; his in-laws, Martin and Marie Heggen; his brothers, Bill, Steve and Nick; his sisters, Ann and Mary; and his brother-in-law Arnie. He will forever be lovingly remembered by his wife Ruth, of 62 years; his children, Laura (Mike) and Michael (Carrie); and his grandchildren, Ashley, Emilee and Tanner, whom he loved beyond measure. He is survived by brothers, Peter (Adele) and Harry (Sylvia), and sister-in-law Lucille. Wally also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends. Wally attended St. Nicholas School and Isaac Newton. During this time he grew his love for sports, especially hockey and baseball. Wally went on to play professional hockey in England and then in the IHL with the Muncie Flyers, in Indiana. While in England, he developed a passion for golf, which he brought back to Canada and shared with his family in later years. Once he returned to Canada, he started his 35-year career with Trans Canada Airline (Air Canada), retiring as a Maintenance Foreman in 1987. During his time at TCA, this is where he met the love of his life, Ruth. During their married years, they took yearly family vacations with their two children, which gave them wonderful memories. Once Wally retired, the happy couple travelled to Scotland and Norway. They also spent their winters in San Antonio, Texas. Wally was a member at both Pine Ridge and Bel Acres Golf Course. You would find Wally in the North End at the AAC (Arlington Athletic Club) shooting snooker with his brother PM and many friends. Wally could also be found at Eddy's Place, having a bowl of soup at his favourite lunch spot. Wally spent his last couple of months in Middlechurch Personal Care Home. The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude for the compassion and care the staff showed during this time. The family would also like to thank Dr. Kevin Saunders for the excellent care he has provided our beloved Wally over the last 30 years, especially in his last six months of life. VICHNAYA PAMYAT Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Wally's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB. Interment and reception to follow. Flowers gratefully declined; you can make a donation in Wally's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at Glen Eden Funeral Home & Cemetery 204-338-7111

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • Our deepest sympathies Ruth and Children. Wally was the most beautiful gentleman God placed on the face of the earth. He didn't have to wait to enter Heaven to receive his Angel's Wings; Wally wore his Angel's Wings with great humility and kindness during his earthly journey. Wally was a long-time member of St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church; he made many, many life-long friendships. His death has left a huge void in our parish. We will miss his smile, cheery disposition and tender spirit. What a sweetheart! May his beautiful soul and vibrant spirit rest in peace for all eternity. Now, Wally has united with all his long-time buddies from Arlington Athletics Club aka "School Boys" and Eddy's Place......playing Snooker and of course Golf. Wally has finally earned his deserved rest............soaring and playing hockey with all of Jesus's Angels. Sleep well dear friend. With great admiration and fondness, Darlene & Duane Dahl - Posted by: Darlene & Duane Dahl, (Friends of Wally from St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church) on: Oct 21, 2018
