MARTHA EVANS (MICHENER)
Born: Jun 11, 1933
Date of Passing: Oct 14, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARTHA EVANS (nee MICHENER) June 11, 1933 - October 14, 2018 Martha died surrounded by the warmth of her family's love on Sunday. Which was appropriate because for Martha, Sunday is the Lord's Day. A fitting day to be called home. Just days before, God called her precious husband Lorne home on Thanksgiving weekend - fitting for a man of such gratitude for God's gifts. God was no less generous with His gifts for Martha. Perhaps that's why she chose to place her faith at the core of her being. It was the source of the love that passed the heartbeat of her values to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and beyond. Martha was predeceased by her husband Lorne; and previously by her brother Mel Michener; and parents, Art and Letty Michener. Martha's mother was a pioneering social worker in Winnipeg who, through her example, instilled in Martha the calling of community service. The Day Nursery Centre of Winnipeg, the Junior League, the United Way of Winnipeg, Meals on Wheels, Catholic Women's League and many other organizations and causes benefitted from the force of Martha's commitment to human dignity and social justice. A gifted musician and teacher, over the years she shared the gift of music to hundreds of Winnipeg children through piano lessons in the family home, while raising five children - all of whom came along before she was 28. An extension of her faith, Martha's family was her everything and witness to her example: her loving children - Kevin (Ronnaug), David (Susan Kagan), Michael (Brenda), Mary Morton (Jeffrey), and Bruce (Brenda); grandchildren - Kristin (Colin Stange), Erik (Amanda), Sarah Gagne (Ray), Alex Morton, Andrew (Hilary Hagerman), Nikki (Brett Cameron), Stephen (Erin Kiazyk), Danielle (Benjamin Luff), Daria and Lisa; and great-grandchildren - Joshua Gagne, Theo and Marley Evans, and Juno and Milo Stange. Martha's Funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Friday, October 19, 2018. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Doctors Without Borders or Rossbrook House. Martha's family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Brightwater Senior Living for the care they provided for the past several months. I still remember the first time I met Mrs. Evans, in 1981 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Winnipeg. I was 12 years old and my family had just moved from Ontario to Manitoba. We went to church and I was immediately drawn to the junior choir. I told my mom I wanted to join, but I was so shy that she had to go up and ask Mrs. Evans for me! She said I was more than welcome to join, and that choir practices were on Fridays after school at 4:00. I quickly grew to love those Friday afternoon rehearsals as well as singing on Sundays. Mrs. Evans was always so kind and patient with us, and I adored her. I loved when she would let me put up the song numbers on the sign on Sunday mornings. In what could be considered a turbulent home life, I found the stability, acceptance, and sense of belonging that I desperately needed in her choir. I remained in the choir until my family once again moved, this time to California. I can honestly say that the thing I missed most when we moved was that choir. Mrs. Evans was the person who instilled in me a lifelong love for music, particularly in church. If it had not been for her, I would have never have met my husband, as we met in a church choir! We are now the Music Ministers at our church, and I know without a doubt that it was Mrs. Evans who planted that seed in me. I will never forget her or the impact she made on my life. She was truly an angel to me. - Posted by: Shannon (Breen) Olivarez (Former OLPH Jr. Choir Member 1981-1984) on: Apr 02, 2019

Martha was a dear patient(dental) of mine for 17 years. Over the 17 yrs I saw her every 3-4months. Her dental appts became much more than just getting her teeth cleaned. We became great friends. She taught me so much wisdom..a woman with so much love and peace to share. She talked so lovingly about her family...I felt over the years I knew each and every one of her children and grandchildren because of the wonderful stories she shared. I will miss Martha's beautiful energy and smile. She now continues her eternal journey in heaven. My deepest condolences to all of the family...you dont know me but ohhhh do I feel I know all of you through your mom. My prayers are with you all. I was honoured to be at Martha's (and Lorne's) funeral. As has been stated many times, Lorne and Martha were a couple that were a loving example for all of us who knew them. I pray you will find peace in knowing that they are joined together forever in Heaven. I was happy to be able to post an article regarding Martha (although small as I could not interview Martha due to her health) in our CWL Newsletter last year. May she Rest in the Peace of Christ along with Lorne. Mary Bibik Past President Catholic Women's League council at OLPH - Posted by: Mary Bibik (friend, fellow CWL member at OLPH) on: Oct 20, 2018
