KENNETH JUNIOR RUSSELL 1930 - 2018 It is with very heavy hearts and sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth Junior Russell. He laid down for his final rest on Friday, October 19, 2018, at the age of 88 years, while residing at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home. Ken was born March 1, 1930 to Thomas and Ethel Russell of Hampton Street in St. James, Winnipeg, MB. Ken was predeceased by the love of his life, Marjorie Belle Russell in October, 2011 and now, seven years later he has gone to be with her in eternity. Ken was also predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Ethel; brothers, Len Russell and Brian Russell, as well as his sister Elaine Laurie (nee Russell), and many aunts, uncles and dear friends. Ken began his career as a plumber in 1947, having entered into an Apprenticeship with his father, Thomas Russell. He also served in the Canadian Army (R.C.I.C.) from September 29, 1948 to April 30, 1952. As an industrious and hard working young man he progressed to working with the Federal Government, Department of Transport (D.O.T.). During his 25 years of service he received many Letters of Accomplishment, and accolades for his leadership skills and positive work ethics. Education was extremely important to him and he was constantly upgrading through various programs, be it work sponsored or personally initiated. He spent many years working in the Arctic during his time with D.O.T. including a term position as Airport Manager in Churchill, MB, where his family was able to join him for the summer. He was a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, St. James #4 Branch. Both Ken and Marge were dedicated and active members and together they forged many long standing friendships. Ken was also an active Brother of the Masons Lodge and received his 50 year pin with them. Over the course of his 88 years Ken was a hard working individual, loyal friend and a great teacher to anyone who needed to learn -whether it was auto mechanics, or any number of skill sets that he was able to pass on. Always being there to help others, he was well respected by his peers, family and friends. Ken was a keen reader and often recited poetry as a way to relax. He was known for his juggling ability, playing the "spoons" and entertaining the young ones with bird whistles. Ken leaves to mourn his three children, Bev (Bob) Killbery, Cheryl (Barry) Myers and David (Chesya) Russell; grandchildren, Michael Killbery, Jenny (Jay) Collins, Danica (Mark) DeSouza, Carling Middlestead (Lindy), Nichole (Michael) Russell-Murray, as well as great-grandchildren, Olivia Collins, Selena, Andrew, Gabriel and Dominic De Souza; his sister-in-law Pat (Ralf) Laube, cousin Barry Buchanan, and many nieces and nephews. "A very large gap has been left in the lives of those still here who were lucky enough to call you Dad, Grandpa, Papa Ken, Uncle Kenny and friend. Thank you for the gifts of love, the lessons, the laughter and your time - you will be missed by many." A Come and Go Reception is being held on Saturday, November 17, 2018. Arrangements by Chapel Lawn Funeral Home. Please contact their office for details, 204-885-9715.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Hey Grandpa, so the other day I was shopping and I heard this whistling and my ears perked up. It sounded like how you used to whistle Grandpa. So me always being the curious one I followed the sound. When I finally located where the noise was nobody was there. At first I thought maybe I had imagined it but in all honesty I feel it was you checking up on me. I miss you and Grandma terribly and life has not been the same since you left us. - Posted by: Michael Killbery (Grandson) on: Apr 22, 2021

  • Grandpa, I will always remember the stories you used to share with me about history. Just sitting there listening to you tell those stories was always enjoyable. I remember when I was little, how you and I would enjoy each other company in the screen house in the summer morning. We would be having a cup of tea and peanut butter toast while you read the paper and me a comic before you left for work. I love you and miss you with all my heart. You are no longer suffering and finally at peace as you are re-united with Grandma. - Posted by: Mike Killbery (Grandson ) on: Oct 24, 2018

  • I have memories as young as 5 with Grandpa Russell. I spent many summers in Winnipeg with Grandma and Grandpa, who played a huge role in who I am today. Their house will always be my family home, and where most of my fondest memories are from. When Grandma passed seven years ago, Grandpa and I became very close, and I cherish those long chats over tea. We would spend hours sitting at his kitchen table, him recounting stories as far back as his childhood. When I wasnt in town, I would make a point of phoning him a few times a week, and he was always so curious about my job at the museum. What I would'nt give for just one more talk around that table, one more cup of tea, one more hug, one more phone call. You have had an impact on my life beyond words Grandpa, and your leaving has left a hole in my heart that I am not sure will ever heal. - Posted by: Carling (Grand Daughter) on: Oct 24, 2018

  • I am truly saddened by the passing of this incredible man. Ken had a huge influence on me in my younger years and passed along a portion of his many skills to me, including home electrical work, plumbing and auto mechanics, some of which I still use to this day. He was a true family man, generous beyond words with a kind heart. While we lost touch over the last several years, I am greatful that I was able to reconnect with him for a short visit last year. My condolences to his entire family. Thank you Ken, for being such a big part of my life for many years. - Posted by: Dave Middlestead (Friend) on: Oct 24, 2018
