BYRON EDWARD MACLELLAN October 18, 1942 - October 20, 2018 "We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time." T. S. Eliot Survived by his wife Jau-Nan, son Luke (Celia) and grandchildren, Liam and Theo; mother Elsie; and brother Lauchlan (Evelyn). Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to a career army officer, the family moved frequently throughout Eastern Canada with one posting to England. Graduating from high school in Montreal, Byron took a clerk position with the Hudson's Bay Company in Northern Quebec, Great Whale River. There he became involved in a co-op that was selling Inuit art. That was the beginning of his lifelong interest in creating sculptures and jewellery. He taught stone carving in various communities. He frequented thrift shops, combed shorelines, and trod woodlands looking for materials to use. In 1973 while cataloguing Inuit art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, he met Jau-Nan Cheng and they got married in 1977. Their artistic pursuits led them to various communities across Canada. He was an avid reader, loved puzzles and games and was a keen Frisbee player. During the past few years he took great pleasure in his grandchildren and valued the 'conversation, camaraderie and community' of Men Shed. An ardent evangelical Christian, Byron was a man of simple needs and did not pursue fame or fortune. He identified with the poor or marginalized and reached out to help many individuals by offering his friendship, a place to stay or financial help. "There are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the ground, there are a thousand ways to go home again." Rumi Funeral service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home on Friday, October 26, 2018 at 10:00 a.m., Pastor Bruce Martin officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lifewater Canada, 457 Heather Cres., Thunder Bay, ON P7E 5L1. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I remember telling some friends that I would attend a certain men's Christian event if I got "the change". Not long after, Byron appeared at our door (knowing nothing of my need or comments) with a bag of loonies which was enough to cover my expenses! God used this thoughtful and unique man to meet my needs in a way that showed that God KNOWS and CARES! - Posted by: Jonathan Mutch (Friend) on: Feb 08, 2019

  • Sincerest condolences from the Tergesen Family. Bryon was a quiet man with so much strength. He taught the boys to carve as youngsters. His patience was remarkable. May you enjoy going over your happy memories as a family and take care of each other. - Posted by: Lorna Tergesen (Friend) on: Oct 26, 2018

  • An incredibly genuine individual. Byron was one of the smartest people I have ever met. He had a great sense of humour, quick wit and over the 55 plus years I knew him never had a bad thing to say about anyone. He loved to create art in wood, bone and stone. In one of the last conversations my wife had with him over the phone, she happened to mention that I had just bought a new gun and Byron's immediate response was "what colour is it". - Posted by: Ted Muir (Friend) on: Oct 25, 2018
