Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN GERARD SAMPSON (UNCLE GERRY) September 9, 1935 - October 30, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerry Sampson at Riverview Health Centre on Tuesday, October 30, 2018. Gerry leaves behind many friends and family members - namely, his wife of 54 years, Phyllis Sampson (nee Connell), his children, Darren Sampson, Sherri-Wynne Sampson, Duane (Ingrid) Sampson and Joy Marie 'Gail' Anderson, and his three grandchildren, Olivia, Yusenia and Anjelina Sampson. Gerry is survived by his sisters, Gloria Smalls and Carol Sampson. Gerry was predeceased by his brother Winston (Dorothy) Sampson, sisters, Enid and Elma Sampson, and parents, Herbert Sampson, and Olive Sampson (nee Hariott). Gerry was born in Trinidad and came to Winnipeg in 1961 where he pursued an Electrical Engineering Degree from the University of Manitoba. Although he had a successful career for over 25 years at Manitoba Hydro, Gerry's true passion was music - in particular Steel Pan music. Gerry was one of the founding members of the Winnipeg Steel Orchestra and HiLife Steel Orchestra where he played, arranged and taught steel pan music, to people of all ages, for over 45 years. A notable pillar in the Winnipeg Caribbean community and longtime Phase 2 Pan Groove supporter, Gerry's big heart and witty humour will be missed by his family and friends. A memorial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at All Saints Anglican Church, 175 Colony Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 1W2. A private interment will be held at a different time.
