JOHN DAVID WEISS March 31, 1930 - October 30, 2018 Dave lived his life in Winnipeg, Manitoba though he migrated every summer to the beloved family cottage on Galt Island in Lake of the Woods. Dave delighted in gatherings with friends and family, lake life, curling, music, pets with personality, and 'scheming' up new inventions and games. Dave's cheerful heart, playful humour, inventive spirit, and his faith in God were unwavering. Traditions were born through Dave's passions; winter sport parties, Grey Cup gatherings with his one-of-a-kind CFL betting game, and his annual GIAGA golf tournament, now in its 51st year and counting. Dave taught countless people how to golf on the infamous pitch-and-putt course that he tinkered with every summer. His unassuming and enthusiastic nature made people feel at ease to share new ideas, be adventurous, and simply to have fun. Dave is predeceased by Fran, his wife and event co-host of 49 years. He is survived by his children, Gina (Rob), Janet (Allan), Derek (Tara), Paul, Shane (Brenda), Erin (Dan); and his grandchildren, Leah (Dan), Shaun, Julian, Andrew, Hailey, Nathaniel, and David. A memorial to celebrate Dave's life in Christ will be held at Holy Cross Parish on Thursday, November 15 at 11:00 a.m.

  • We are so sorry to learn of Dave's passing. We have been lucky enough to be guests at Galt Island on two occasions and have delighted in the experiences. We have loved the stories of the mischief wrought by Dave, and appreciate that his passing leaves a hole in your lives. • Lake of the Woods and Uncle Dave will forever go hand in hand in my memory book. From his early spring blasting out on Galt Island that earned him the nickname Dynamite Dave, to his role as Father Dave in the 'funeral procession' for the hunt coat, or the time he took all of the Galt Island gang out on the motorized floating dock only to have my mother look out the window and think her children were walking on water. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face, which probably meant he was thinking about his next project. To all the Weiss clan, you are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Lots of Love, Carl & Cathy Brooks - Posted by: Cathy Brooks (Family) on: Nov 12, 2018

  • RIP , Dave . I will miss your laughter and smile . Was happy to have seen you during the summer when in Winnipeg and talked about the many years we've known each other and visits we've shared . The visits to Galt Island were a treat and I will always remember your devious golf course . What a great mind imagined this challenge and built it . Condolences to your family and rest in peace with your beloved Fran . - Posted by: Ken Dopson (Friend) on: Nov 10, 2018
