LUCY SCHAAN (nee KROLL) On November 2, 2018, one of the biggest hearts in the world stopped beating. Peacefully, with her family by her side, God took Mom, Oma, Gross Oma up to heaven to be with her loving husband, Rudy. She leaves to mourn her children, Susan Colpitts, Herb and Marlies Schaan, Patti and Bill McDougall; her grandchildren, Keith and Cheryl Schaan, Tara (Brett) Birch, Mark Schaan and Zee Leung, Matthew and Samuel McDougall; her great-grandchildren, Payton and Griffin Schaan, Noah, Liam, Campbell and her namesake, Lucy Birch; her sisters-in -law, Helen and Gerry St. Jean, Pauline Schaan, and Erica Parker; and her special cousin Audrey Kendall. Lucy will also be missed by so many friends, extended and adopted family. Lucy was born in Lotz, Poland on December 6, 1929. As a teenager during the Second World War, while attending an all girls school, she was forced to flee the Russians and never saw her mother and most of her family again. She found work after the war in the Lune Berge Heide where she met the love of her life, Rudy. In 1949 she followed Rudy and emigrated to Saskatchewan. Rudy and Lucy were married in 1950 and moved to Winnipeg in 1956 with two children in tow. In 1959 Rudy and Lucy moved to Springfield Road where, to the day of her heart attack, she lived, even after Rudy's passing in 2011. She was determined to live in that house till the day she died and, as she so often proved, she fulfilled her prophecy. That would have made her proud. Lucy enjoyed spending time with family and friends at home and at their Bird Lake cottage, Schaan-gri-la, a place she loved so much. Lucy was an amazing woman. Kind, so loving, strong, determined, stubborn, hard working, opinionated, charitable, extroverted. She could speak three languages, sing a thousand different songs, grow and tend her garden and her yard, even at the age of eighty-eight, and tell stories for days. She was a great cook, money manager, organizer, card player, puzzle solver, caregiver, seamstress, knitter and blueberry picker. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and caregivers at St. Boniface Hospital especially: Krista, Donna, Nitara, and Dr. Lee. Mom's care was extraordinary and our mother loved all of the people who tended to her. They were all "beautiful people" A celebration of Lucy's life will be held on December 27, 11:00 a.m.at Grace Lutheran Church, 211 Kimberly, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Herzliches Beileid, liebe Tara. Wir denken an euch Mama und Papa Müller - Posted by: Sigrid Müller (Freund) on: Nov 16, 2018

  • Wishing the entire Schaan family my deepest sympathies. What a beautifully written tribute. - Posted by: Susan Pausin (Friend) on: Nov 10, 2018
