ANNE MAKOWSKY August 1, 1935 - November 7, 2018 The world is a different place today. Peacefully and surrounded by her loving family, Anne Makowsky (nee Sportak) passed away in Pinecrest Home for the Aged, on November 7, 2018 at the age of 83. She was welcomed into heaven by her late husband William Makowsky, who has been waiting 30 years to be reunited with her, after his passing in 1988, at the age of 59. Anne was born on August 1, 1935, the seventh of ten children, in Caliento, Manitoba. She is predeceased by her parents, Mike and Helen Sportak, as well as siblings, Mary, Agnes, Maurice, John, and William, whom also met her to welcome her in heaven. Being part of a large, loving family is part of Anne's legacy. She is survived by her six children: Emil (Donna), Gordon, Christine (Gordon), Angela, Theresa and Roland (Barb). Anne's greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren: Crystal and Katelyn, Ryan (Kelly) and Michela, Dale and Lisa (Terrence), and Brandon and Tegan, and her one great-grandchild Jackson, to whom she was Stasha Baba. Anne is also survived by siblings: Rose, Paul, Sr. Daria (Mildred), and Joseph. Anne was an inspiration and role model to her numerous nieces and nephews. From the Sportak side of the family she will be lovingly remembered by Jerry, Stanley, Ron, Carolyn, Lorne, Walter, Diane, Brian, Mildred, Sheila, Clifford, Michael, Amelia, John, George, Mike, Patrick, Marion, Vivian, David, Linda, Sylvia, Marla, Brent, Sandra, Roy, Garry, Sharon, Ruth, Marty, Randy, and Colleen. Mourning her passing from the Makowsky side of the family are in-laws, Helen, Marie and Nick. She was predeceased by Maggie. The Makowsky nieces and nephews who will fondly remember Anne are Susan, Jim, Kathy, Iris, Richard, Rachel, Robert, Garry, Laurie, Gene, Judy, Bruce, Barry, Cheryl, Daryl and Connie. Anne and her siblings were born and raised on the Caliento family farm. When they got older, Anne and her sisters took turns working in Winnipeg and helping out on the farm. Anne's first job was in lamp factory in Winnipeg. In 1954, at the age of 19, she married William Makowsky. They began their married life in Sundown, then Vassar, Manitoba and finally moved to Kenora, Ontario in the summer of 1969. They raised six children and enjoyed many happy family occasions. In 1988, husband Bill, passed away and with quiet strength and commitment, she assumed the role as head of the family. Her family gatherings were legendary. She could cook for five or 25 with no notice, and there was always extra food for the kids to take home. Her children's families loved coming to Baba's house. Anne was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League and participated in many St. Nicholas Church occasions. Anne was a translator for Kenora Multicultural Society, was involved in curling and loved gardening. She volunteered at many dinners at the St. Nicholas Hall, bake sales, socials and so on. After moving from the Zimmerman Drive home she and Bill built, Anne lived at Rocky Heights then Parkview. She volunteered for many social occasions. She was a great help to many of her neighbours and was an active member of the community. The family would like to thank the caring, compassionate and friendly staff at Pinecrest for their support of Mom over the last four and one-half years. Anne will be forever remembered for her very gentle and friendly nature. She was a content and cheerful person with unlimited energy and compassion for the people around her. To celebrate Anne's life, there will be Prayers held at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Centre on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church on Wednesday, November 14 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at St. Nicholas Cemetery with a light lunch and visiting to follow.
