MIKE BABINSKY It is impossible to sum up the essence of someone who has done so much in their lives in just one paragraph. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing, on November 8, 2018, of our husband, dad and grandpa, Mike Babinsky. He was born on January 23, 1962 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is predeceased by his mother Anne, father Alex, brother Gordie and son Isaac. He is survived by his loving wife Andrea, five children Krista (Phil), Nicole (Derek), Alex (Jenna), Mackenzie (Michael), Jake and 10 grandchildren. Though he loved to travel his true passion was his home, the North End of Winnipeg, and making a difference. From a young age he knew the importance of community, when he started the hockey team the North Winnipeg Braves. In true Mike Babinsky spirit, he then went on to create the world's largest Sponge Puck Hockey League at Old Ex, which he ran with his for wife 25 years. He was a school trustee for almost 25 years and had a strong passion for education. He always emphasized the importance of education with his six children and was proud to speak at 100's of graduations. He was born to be an entrepreneur and never saw anything as a challenge in life, instead an opportunity. He had a way with words and loved captivating people with his extensive stories of his life, travel and experiences. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the St. Boniface Hospital in memory of Mike Babinsky. You have outgrown this world Dad, we love you and are thinking of you as you travel beyond this life. XOXO

Well I remember the day I complained about the officials at Spongee to Mike. He calmly suggested that if I thought I could do better perhaps I should don the pinstripes. I did for the next 10 years doing iron man shifts both Andrea and I at valley gardens... I enjoyed many laughs with the family for years to come. I can remember Mike coming fishing with me and he was just happy to be in the boat! We caught some fish had a great time with the kids.. Andrea and Mike were kinda like the best babysitters in the world.. my son would hang around the club and Andrea and Mike would make sure he had hot coco and goodies while I played or was an official. Mike took great care of the area, I remember his son Alex and my son Justin planting flowers all around the old ex. In summer... up and down the streets planting and watering trees... Mike made sure the community was looked after in many ways... it's been several years since our paths crossed... but it doesn't change the fact he cared about everyone. You will be missed my friend, you left us far to soon...you have touched many and I really enjoyed you raising holy Kane on the school board when it needed to be done! Peace be with you brother...I know your starting a new league in heaven! - Posted by: Craig stapon (Friend) on: Nov 11, 2018

My heartfelt condolences go out to Mrs. Babinsky and family. For over forty years I have lived in the same home area, what is now in Winnipeg School Division Ward 9. I first met Mike when he was first running for school trustee. He was running for school trustee for in my home area. In dealing with him as my school trustee he was very helpful in helping me deal with various specific concerns and issues. Then things got shuffled and Mike became school trustee for a different ward that didn’t include my home area. Even when no longer my school trustee he would stop to say hello should our paths cross when out and about. At one point not all too long after Mike was no longer my school trustee I found it necessary to take an unfortunate matter to before the Winnipeg School Division board, and even though Mike was no longer officially my school trustee, he welcomed me and took personal interest in the matter at hand. Dare I say as a school trustee member of the school board he was more concerned and supportive than my official school trustee member of the board at the time? But that was Mike. He was no-nonsense, and common sense practical, consistently trying to do what he figured to be the right solution for whatever the issue at hand at the moment was. Occasionally his no-nonsense attitude to getting things done ruffled a feather or two, but you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet… ;-) No doubt these traits were the very essence of him in whatever endeavor he found himself pursuing. The world was enriched by his presence and could use many more people like he was. The world will now be poorer for his passing, but heaven will be richer. When my wife told me she had heard on the news that Mike had recently passed, I immediately said a little prayer for him. That’s about the best I could do for Mike at the moment. Please Mrs. Babinsky and family, allow me to offer the following simple poem as perhaps a bit of comfort at this trying time. I suspect Mike would concur. —A Step on the Road to Home— “When I come to the end of the road, And the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room, Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little—but not too long, And not with your heads bowed low, Remember the love that we all shared, Miss me—but let me go. This is a journey that we all must take, And each must go alone, It’s all a part of the Master’s plan, A step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick at heart, Go to the friends we know, Bury your sorrows in doing good deeds, Miss me—but let me go.” — © 2001 Camilla Marie Stewart, S.F.O. — © 2001 Calvin Earl Mark Kendall, S.F.O. - Posted by: Calvin E. We are so sorry for your loss...we only knew of Mike through the hard work he put into being a school trustee for so many years. and all the efforts he made striving to make the "North End" a better place to live with so much dedication. He really gave a great deal of enthusiasm and hard work and it showed. Our sincere apologies to you Andrea, his children and grand children and all those who will feel the horrible loss of his untimely passing. To Andrea and children, Oh my God. I can't believe it. I am so, so sorry for your loss of Mike. So, so unexpected..I wanted to talk to him this week. My heart is so full of compassion for you, Andrea and the kids. I will always remember him as my no-nonsense barred landlord for over 11 years here at the Venus Apts., but also, always as a man who had a big smile that made him look like a little boy with a secret. He was a good person to know, and I am glad to be one of the people to be acquainted with him in this life. He and your son are together forever, Andrea. I am so sorry. If there is anything I can do................ - Posted by: Marie Fontaine (Tenant of Venus Apts. Selkirk, MB) on: Nov 10, 2018
