JANET EILEEN KENNEDY The family of Janet Eileen Kennedy announces her death on November 20, 2018. Janet, the only daughter of D. Edward Kennedy and Mabel McDonald, was born May 14, 1919 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. In 1920 the family moved to The Pas, Manitoba where Janet went to Sacred Heart School and The Pas Collegiate before graduating from St. Mary's Academy in Winnipeg. Graduating as an R.N. from St. Anthony's School of Nursing, she worked in hospitals in Camrose, Alberta and Vernon, BC. Janet then obtained her B.N. from the University of Western Ontario and began public health nursing in Manitoba. Janet worked in many parts of northern and western Manitoba and became the Director of Public Health Nursing for Manitoba until her retirement. In work she was one of few women in the senior civil service and was a mentor and trailblazer for fellow nursing colleagues. Janet steadfastly took on many challenging policy issues and program innovations including contributing to the eventual implementation of the provincial home care program. Throughout her life Janet generously committed time to her family - siblings, nieces, nephews and in-laws. Janet was an ardent, informed Catholic and in her retirement, she was active for many years with volunteer groups at St. Ignatius Parish in Winnipeg and a long-time board member of the Manitoba Lung Association. An excellent cook, she loved to share the hospitality of her lovely house with family and friends. She enjoyed summers at the family cottage at Clearwater Lake and travel - across Canada and several trips to Great Britain and the continent. Janet loved the Arts including ballet, theatre and the symphony. She had a penchant for style and many enjoyable times were had shopping along Portage Avenue from The Bay to Eaton's on a Saturday afternoon. Janet was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Mabel, brothers, Father Edward C.Ss.R., Jack and Kenny, and sister-in-law Caroline. Grieving her death are her nephews and nieces, Edward (Stella), Winnipeg, Grace, Teresa, Simone and Daniel and great-great-nephew Casey; Gerard (Jeanette), Toronto, Theria, John-Julian and great-great-niece Charlotte; Donald (Marika), Kelowna, Katrina, Krissie, Monique, Jack, Bobby and great-great-niece Karolina; Joan, Winnipeg; Maureen (Robin), Winnipeg, Erica, Karine and Nicole and Susan Kennedy, Calgary. Many thanks to the staff of Riverview Health Centre who compassionately cared for Janet. Mass of the Resurrection will be on Saturday, November 24 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford Street, with burial in the family plot in Riverside Catholic Cemetery in The Pas, MB on Monday, November 26.
